Tyres in East Africa

Hello All

We're in need of 2 new rear tyres (150/70 17's). Both currently running TKC80s but looking for anything twinduro as we will now be 90% on tarmac.

Were currently in Kenya heading south through Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and looking for an opportunity to change in any of these countries.

Does anyone have any positive experience from buying or shipping to these countries without the need to remortgage!

Thanks in advance
Boomer

Your best option will probably be to get them shipped to Nairobi. If you bring your carnet to the post office you don't have to pay import-tax.

Yep, would agree with AliBaba to try to solve the tire issue in Nairobi if you haven't left already. Jungle Junction and the KTM dealer would be worthwhile stopped by at to see what they have in stock.

From my experiences of 10 years ago (things don't change fast in Africa) you'll be very very lucky to get any 17 inch rubber between south of Nairobbery and north of the RSA border. The places mentioned above are your best bet. I managed to get something Chinese from an Indian owned bike shop that wasn't too extortionately priced.

Take your sense of humour and chastity belt with you when visiting the KTM or Michelin dealer. You'll feel well and truely done over when you hear their prices.:funmeterno:

Good luck
Chris

Thanks all,......I should have mentioned that I'm writing from the lounge at JJ so i know what Chris has and the prices quoted across Nairobi

Ive got enough rubber to get me to Botswana and I was wondering whether folks had experience couriering tyres up from SA? Failing that any overlander shortly leaving the south in a truck that wouldn't mind slinging a few tyres on a roof rack.

BTW I had a great experience with a Kenwood dealer today in Nairobi (Beamspot Communications) who spent half a day fixing my autocom and refused to accept any payment. I'll be sending him some beer, but nice to know there is still a few folks like this in Nairoberry !

Maybe you can make it to Windhoek? They have tires.
