transiting Nigeria in right hand drive car?

Hello all,

We are driving our UK Reg Toyota from London to Cape Town and will be transiting Nigeria in the next few weeks. We have heard some people have had some serious problems with police because of the right hand drive. Anyone know if the exact rules or anything in print we could use to persuade the police that we have the right to transit?
Many thanks.
James

A rather humorous run in I had with the traffic police near Enugu regarding having a RHD vehicle in Nigeria:

Cop: It is illegal to have a right hand drive vehicle in Nigeria!
Me: Since when?
Cop: 1972
Me: So why did they allow me to enter the country?
Cop: The Douane do not do their job properly this is why!
Me: So there are a lot of people breaking the law in Nigeria because I have seen alot of RHD vehicles here!
Cop: And WE WILL catch them ALL eventually!

As long as you have a CDP, and you are transiting the country, I understand it is ok to bring a RHD into the country. However, importing one is banned. That is my understanding, and is much the same throughout most countries in West Africa.

The traffic police are going to give you a hard time but remain confident. don't be intimidated and keep a good sense of humour and all will be ok - the traffic cops are actually quite a good laugh once they know you won't be taken for a ride.

Post elsewhere suggested allowing at least double the normal driving time to allow for all the police stops of RHD cars.

Cameroon is the same problem regarding RHD.

Thanks everyone,

I will continue the hunt for a piece of official paper which shows we have the law on our side but that may be a wild goose chase.

Will let you know how it goes.
Cheers

I tried to find it for you but I couldn't find the post on the FB page. Write these guys at Where To Next Africa, I have see they had the same problem in Nigeria but a follower of there FB blog replied with all the information you are looking for. Basically it is illegal to have right-hand drive IF it is registered in Nigeria, but your not so you can drive there. Write them a quick message and ask for the post.
