Tanzania road

I am looking for any info on the road from Iringa to Dodoma to moshi please. We do not have 4x4. in fact we have very heavy vehicles to take through here.

thanks

Paved the whole way.
I did not go to Iringa, but I'm pretty sure that is paved too.

The road from Iringa to Dodoma is not good at all, it is not paved and is a badly rutted dirt road. In addition, there have been reports from time to time of bandits on this road; so use a lot of care if you take this road.

I would suggest that you travel Northeastward from Iringa to Morogoro (through Mikumi NP), then continue Eastward (at the Morogoro roundabout continue straight through past the bus station, the BP station, and the tobacco company) to Chilinze (about 100km West of Dar) then turn North (weight check as you turn the corner) and take this road to Segara/Tanga turnoff, Same, Mwanga, and Moshi. This way it will be paved roads all the way and they are relatively safe roads. I've traveled this route often, and I've also traveled the Iringa/Dodoma road. Good rest stop at the Morogoro roundabout (restaurant at bus station up the hill), and at Segara (decent restaurant on West side of the road just before the sharp turn left).

Traveled across TZ a few times now and everytime have been told by the local truckers that this road is really rough and so we take the longer, but easier, route via Chalinze.

I think we will just have to opt for the longer way. If we all had 4x4 i would do it, but we are taking CIT vehicles so i don't think it would be a good idea.

Thanks again

Yes -- this road is very rough indeed. It's been known to break many 4x4s.

Iringa to Dodoma wasn't all that bad a year ago- on my bike. There was very little traffic and the scenery was great. I passed a few buses coming the opposite way, not much more. I never rode really fast, but overall, I thought the road was just another secondary road in Africa (and there is a serious drop from secondary to the next level!). The first hour or so out of Iringa I was convinced I was on the wrong road- it just kept getting smaller and smaller. It was a fun ride though, glad I did it. Thing is, doing a road like this favors the bike so it's hard to "compare." After Dodoma, I went to Rwanda, so I can't help you there. Have fun, H.

Dodoma north is rough

Dodoma to Tarangire mine is a really bad road.
During and after the rains it is a muddy deep pot holed rutted road.

During the dry season, the dust is finer than talcom powder and you dont see 1 & 1/2 ft deep ruts. I actually broke my chassis in one of these. The big question is why (other than for the dodoma hotel) would anyone want to go to Dodoma? North of Dodoma is actually very scenic, but Dodoma itself, Avoid it.

if you insist on taking a bad road head off towards the Lake, and try your luck going the west circuit, really worth it! The road from Malawi to Tanga is quicker than from Dodoma to Arusha.

If you do go on this route, you will come across a Dam made by the italians a while ago that is very impressive, and worth stopping over on, it has an HydroElectric project that you can find a place to sleep at and the guys are really friendly (helped weld my car together!) This is not marke don the Michellin map.
