We are in Thailand at the moment and are planning to ship from Malaysia to Cape Town to ride up back home via the east side.
Major problem we are facing now is where its best to obtain the Sudan visa. It seems to take an enormous amount of waiting time to get approved, even if we send our passports to The Netherlands.

Can anyone share recent experiences on where it would be best to apply on our route? (I even mailed the sudanese embassy in malaysia but haven't got any response till now)

security problems there.
Or by ferry from Aqaba(Jordan) to Venice by ferry.
May be a better solution for you, too.

what do you mean exactly by "there" and to take a ferry in Jordan we first need to ride our route which is from capetown to egypt.....

The Sudan visa is obtained easily in Cairo or Addis - takes about one day and you need a letter of introduction from your Embassy in Addis/Cairo. We did this in Feb 2011. See http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...454#post326467

Your real issue is likely to be the Ethiopian visa as you are going North. It is no longer available in Nairobi or even Harare I am told. You need to get it from your home country. The only exception is Khartoum - we got ours there within one day, but we met several people going North who had their passports shipped to Europe or flown to Khartoum for their Ethiopian visas

In short, travelling south to north, get your Ethiopia visa in Harare (a post on here from Roamingyak says he got it there) and your Sudan visa in either Nairobi or Addis. Nairobi is cheaper, but the clock is ticking sooner on the time you have to enter Sudan by.

FWIW, I have just arrived Nairobi from Ethiopia, and have met two sets of English travelers today stuck here going North who have told by the Ethiopian Embassy in Harare that they no longer issue visas for non-residents. Seems to be a very recent change. They are sending their passports to the UK to get the visa.

Well I hope my year long visa from Harare is still valid! ;-)

I'm sure you could buy Zim residency quite easily if you need to...???

so actually the header should be changed to ethiopian visa as this seems to be the most difficult one......

and it still isnt'clear to me if it's still possible in harare or not.....
since we are dutch it might be different?

and has someone tried to get it at the embassy in south africa?

if you send it through DHL how do you get around the "return ticket requirement" ?

Getting the visa from the uk there was no requirement to have a return ticket. But it seems like the criteria vary depending on your country.

Sudan and South Sudan
 

Not entirely sure what your timeframe is like, but South Sudan is due to declare its independence on 9 July this year, so something for you to be aware of, as this will have implications on visas, travel permits, border demarcation and security issues as well.

You can currently easily pick up travel permits from the Govt. of South Sudan liaison office in Nairobi or Kampala. I just came back from Nairobi and Juba and had no issues. Getting a visa for (North) Sudan is harder though. I have been waiting for more than three months to get one (need it for work), and still waiting for official approval from the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Don't have experience of getting Ethiopian visas in neighbouring countries, I got mine through their Embassy in the UK when I went last year.
