Sudan/Egypt ferry for 4wd

Hi all,

what's the latest on taking a Land Rover on the ferry to Aswan from Wadi Halfa.
I know in Aswan the barge as well as the passengers ferry leave on Monday so you can drive the car on the barge and then take the passengers ferry as they do not allow you anymore on the barge.

From Sudan it's a bit awkward i've been told.
Ferry leaves Wednesday but barge only Thursday. Can you go with the barge from this side (as this was the case in the past) ???
Bikers don't have this problem as they can take bike on the ferry with them.

Any advise is welcome as i'm not prepared to leave the keys in Wadi Halfa to let somebody else drive the Landy on the barge.

Cheers

Roel

Sudan to Egypt

Hi Roel,

We did this trip little over a year ago and the Sudanese are not as difficult as the Egyptians. North-South there is only one passenger allowed on the barge but south -north this rule does not seem to exist.

We were allowed to stay on the barge with our vehicles. The departure times are not really fixed. They are flexibel as many things in Africa but I believe the ETD is Thursday, as you say.

Cheers,

Noel

HI Roel

I did this crossing in August and believe me the Sudanese are not at all s bad as the Egyptians, they are a regular pain in the ass in Egypt.

The crossing as you know goes on Wednesday and the car BArge goes on Thursday. YOu cant go with the cars on the barge and unfortunately there is no choice but to leave the keys with someone to drive the car onto the barge.

I used Midhat Mahir in Khartoum to help me sort some stuff there and his uncle, a guy called Magdi is the man on the ground in Wadi Halfa.
He can organise everything to get you on the ferry and get your car to Aswan safely. I have seen it work and you can trust them. They obviously will charge you but I dont think they are over expensive.

Midhats numbers in Khartoum are 00249912253484 or 002249121313101

Magdi's number in Wadi halfa is 002499 121730885 ( im alsmost sure but if its wrong midhat will give it to you)

best of luck

Gary

That's quite conflicting informtion here.
It is possible or not to stay with the car?
I am not very keen on giving the keys to everything I belong to somebody else to drive it on a boat. But I am certainly not planning on giving my keys and then leaving on another boat!

Would love to hear the latest on this...

I've only done it in the other direction, but I agree that you can trust Midhat. Nice guy.

Actually , sorry I wasnt paying attention to Noel's post.

I know you definitely can not go on the ferry going north but I dont know about going south. If you contact Midhat , he will probably know

Hi Frederik, trying to figure out the same thing here, does anybody know if the rules have changed going from Wadi Halfa to Aswan?

Hi we did the trip Egypt to Sudan 2 years ago and were NOT allowed to stay with our car but met many people coming the other way who WERE allowed. Maybe it has changed since then. On the plus side my experience of Egyptians is that they will try anything in their power to swindle you/rip you off/cheat you etc. but never steal from you. We didn't see our car for 4 days after hopping onto that deathtrap of a ferry but it was fine when the car finally did arrive. Barges are not that safe either - a week after we crossed one sank to the bottom. Bring a tarp with you if going on the ferry so you can stay up on deck (not as smelly) and have shelter from the sun. Also, it is likely only you will be driving it on and off the barge so you can lock it as we did.
