Sudan & Egypt Visas

I will be travelling from South Africa to Egypt next year.

I have read that getting the Sudan visa in Ethiopia is a hassle and that getting it in Harare is better. Has anyone had any recent experiences.

In addition, I have searched but not really been fruitful in finding the best place for the Egypt visa. I will enter from Sudan. Help needed on this I am afraid. Also if one forgets the Carnet, is it possible to enter Egypt without one?

Failing all this, is there a way back to good old blighty via another route? or would I just need to go back through amin land Africa ie Libya etc?

Thanks in advance

I'm in Nairobi at the moment and you can get the Sudan visa here.

There's another thread on here about not being able to get the Ethiopia visa in Nairobi anymore, but getting it in Harare instead. The other option is dhl your passport back to your home country from Nairobi for this visa.

My plan is to get the Egypt visa in Sudan. I haven't heard that this isn't possible, but I'll see when I get there.

afaik Egypt is the one country in Africa where the carnet is absolutely needed. Kenya would also be difficult without in a 4x4.

To get a Sudanese visa you will need the Egyptian in advance to prove you will leave the country......well, this was the case up until last year.

Getting the 14 day transit visa for Sudan in Addis Ababa is not diffciult, should take 48hrs...but if you want a full tourist visa then this IS a hassle!

Egyptian visa in Addis too is quite possible, usually 24-48 hrs.......would be easier to get the Egyptian visa on the Wadi Halfa Aswan ferry as you dock at the port, but to get the Sudanese visa you will need the Egyptian visa beforehand.

I'm in Nairobi at the moment and have personally met 3 other travellers who have obtained their Sudanese tourist (not transit) visas here without already having an Egyptian visa.

The visas are valid from the date of issue but valid for 2 months, giving time to get through Ethiopia. All 3 have got their visas next day, and report no problems and generally a good friendly experience with the Sudan embassy.
