Southern Africa Trip
Hello!
I am preparing a mid-november to mid-december trip in Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and eventually Namibia. Does anybody know if I can make a visa at the border for all those countries? We are two, travelling in a Mozambican car and with Portuguese passports. Thanks, R. |
Unfortunately I cannot speak for Mozambique, but South Africa and Namibia will only let you enter if you have a valid ticket for a return flight to your home country or any onward flight.
Given you've got your correct travel documents South Africa, NAM, Bot and Lesotho issue a visa at the border post. The two bigger countries for a max of 3 months, the two small countries for the amount of days you intend to stay there. You should also make sure that the cat insurance of MOZ is valid for S.A. |
SA visa
Usually you will be granted a SA visa crossing the border overland. It might be helpful to bring return flight tickets as proof of onward travel even if the departure is not from a SA airport (or prood of your residential status in Moz if not visible in your passport)
I have traveled overland to Namibia from SA a couple of times and always got a visa at the border. They just wanted to know how long I am going to stay. This used to be the situation if you entered SA overland as a EU foreigner with your own vehicle but it might have changed. |
Hello all,
I am portuguese, and have portuguese passport, but I am a resident in Mozambique. As to enter in South Africa, Swaziland or Lesotho, I never had any kind of trouble. My question rephrases, being already in South Africa, will I be able to go to Bots, Nam and Zam without visa trouble? Cheers, R. |
VISA trouble
Visa trouble: No. Not into Bots and Nam. with Portuguese / EU passport. ( I assume there is no difference between EU nationalities?) I know that I as a German with German / EU passport also don't need a prearranged visa for Zambia, can get it at the border.

Hi Renato
I lived and travelled around southern Africa for 2.5 years- between May 99 and end 2001 - we travelled through Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and RSA on numerous occasions and never once had to do anthing other than pay for visa and state number of days or length of visit/visa required - I have a large 40 page passport nearly full of the stamps for this area alone! Perhaps check with the embassies concerned in Portugal or Mozambique as to what their standard requirement is for Portugese nationals and then get going! Good luck Chris |
Clarification:
My previous reply of course should read:
Visa trouble: No. Will go and edit it and then stand in the corner for half an hour :-) |
thx all!
will have a nice trip for sure! |
