South Africa to Zambia

Hello! Last year with HU help I rode a KLR640 from Michigan, USA to Guatemala and donated my bike to charity.

My next adventure is in the planning stages now. I'd like to buy a bike in Cape Tow, SA, ride through SA, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and donate the bike to an orphanage in Zambia.

Would love some advice and help.

Hey, Check out the sticky 'buying a bike in South Africa' that has most of what you need for the buying side of things.
Your route sounds fine.
You may just need to check about importing into Zambia, that usually involves some high amount of taxes ~50% of the vehicle value. you will also need a South African police clearance and certificate of export from the traffic department.

Thanks!

Leaving bikes in different countrys is allways hard for customs reasons. Also Sambia is not part of the southafrican union so you will not do a big favor to the charity organisation as well. They will have to pay someone to return the bike to southafrica. A Southafrican registered bike can only be sold there.

Another tipp because i know this Area very well: Do "Tobis best of Southernafrica tour", wich i offer as a german speaking tourguide as well. Insted of very zivilized Swaziland and bouring Mozambik (ok it has nice coasts) after the Krüder Nationalpark (not allowed by bike) i would visit the unzivilized Lesotho via the famous Sani Pass in the Drakensmountains and then ride baviaans Kloov, see wild pinguins in Simonstown, visit Cape of good hope, hike up Table Mountain, ride up the skeletten coast to Namibia, visitin ship wrecks and the worlds highest dune, then Walfish bay with wild see lions and flamingos up to Etosha National Park (not allowed by bike) and ride back via Botswana, Okavango Delta and Chobe Nationalpark (not allowed by bike) to Southafrica. Skipp Sambia or just visit the Victoria Falls (cozungula Farry is nice but to leave Southafrican Union is not possible with a rented car) and sell/leave the bike or rented 4x4 in Southafrica. Doable in one or better two months for about US$2999 pP. Just send me an email if you need more Infos.
