Stick to Vaufi's route
In case of doubt, I would definitely stick to ALL Vaufi's proposals! He was even right about the best beer. Thanks a lot for the wise advice, Vaufi.
I'll add a few tips about Western Cape: if you decide follow the coast, at the end of the Garden Route , after Plettenberg Bay , take road R102 indicated as Nature's Valley, which crosses Tsitsikamma National Park , a very dense rain forest, very nice. You'll find a "closed road" sign, no problem, go ahead, it's only due to some rocks fallen, but it's nothing, really. Swartberg pass (R328) is really beautiful and a very easy dirt road (even me, a non-experienced off roader, could do it with pillion on a V-Strom, so imagine you alone!). And right on the other side, there’s a beautiful canyon right north of De Rust (N12). Have a great trip, Esteban |
Spend some good time in Cape Town. There is LOADS to do. Stay at Big Blue. They can park about four bikes with notice.
Big Blue Backpackers in Cape Town, South Africa - Find Cheap Hostels and Rooms at Hostelworld.com Make sure you ride down to Gansbaii for swimming with Great Whites and then down to Agulhus (Tip of Africa). The South Coast is fabulous. You will of heard of the garden route. In the east there is great Scuba diving and the Drakensburg Mountains are amazing. Be sure not to miss out on Swaziland and Lesotho... |

Oh, regarding Swartberg Pass: I quite forgot "De Hel" or Gamka Kloof. If you cross the Pass, just north of the summit, a small road turns off westwards to "De Hel". This is an absolute "must-see", a beautiful piste leading ca. 60 kays into the Gamka valley. At the end of the road is a small visitors info showing the history of the place and displaying snakes, scorpions, spider etc. living there. The valley was only discovered 200 years after that area was colonised. But due to harsh climatic conditions it was given up in 1962, just after the access road was finished. Here's a view from "The Hell" http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/m...-Swartberg.jpg The canyon north of De Rust is the "Meiringspoort". |
