Senegalese Gambian borders closed for all vehicles

As a result of a dispute between the two governments, the borders are currently closed.

Hi Birima,

Thank you for this valubale update.

In the article it does say "commercial vehicles are still not allowed to go across the borders and people are frustrated in their trade transactions"

Therefore presumably tourist vehicles are still allowed to cross?

birima 15 Mar 2016 00:12

In one of the articles I read that even diplomatic vehicles were denied.

Maybe you have chance with a diplomatic bike but I wouldn't count on it.

I almost bought a car this week to go but after reading this I decided to fly.

I am also getting tired with the rip off for older cars in Senegal and Mauritania as a whole.

Cheers

WHY IS THE BORDER CLOSURE STILL DRAGGING? – Foroyaa Newspaper

Nandor 20 Mar 2016 09:29

Not closed for tourists

It is the same almost every year. Senegal closes the border for some weeks due to road toll disputes with the Gambia. It is closed only for African traffic. Not for tourists with European license plates. Border Police told us differently and obviously wanted money. We where patient, told them friendly but insistently that we are tourists, the government order does not apply to us. After 1,5 hours we crossed the border at Farafeni, without paying a cent. Gambian side told us we where the only car that day. We met a British couple that crossed the same border some days before.

The border is said to be open again since yesterday anyhow.

Hi Nandor,

Thanks for the update! We have a group of 17 that need to cross the border in a few weeks so this is most welcome news. Cheers!

You are very welcome. Are you heading further down to Guinea (Conakry)? We where planing to do so and on to Sierra Leone. Afraid of the recent Ebola cases and more possible border closings we are now about to chance travel plans to cross via Mali into Burkina or Ivory Coast.

Sunny greetings from Sukuta, the Gambia

Hi Nandor,

Our group is coming the other way to you (ie heading towards Senegal) - you might see them en route (blue Mercedes truck with lots of flags down the side!)
