Senegal - carnet??
 

Hi

I will be traveling from Bamako to Dakar and then back to Nuakchott and Marocco.
On Mali / Senegal border do I need to get a Carnet for Senegal? Any info on that?

I crossed the Diama boarder this Monday. I was issued a passavant for 2500 CFA and given 48 hours to have my canet stamped in the Dakar Port. One guy at the crossing did not have a carnet and was trying to sort out the problem, not sure how. I stamped my carnet today, it was free, the only problem was to find the place.

The boarder crossing in Diama was painless, the Mauritanian customs and police asked for 10 euro each, the Senegalese did not ask for anything. Even though I failed to open my rear door for customs examination. The only negative thing is the road from Rosso to Diama is sometimes pretty bad.

I did that trip last year and no CDP was needed.

i also made the same crossing on motorbike a couple of times last year, no carnet is needed, and the money requested by the customs is negotiable, got away without paying twice and even had a goats head freshly stewed to nibble at in the customs hut,you do have to pay a national park fee, but its only a few pounds.

We (4 motorbikes) went through Diama a month ago.

If you have a carnet it sounded easy (we didn't).

With no carnet you need to get an import waiver. This should be just to transit through Senegal and should cost 5000 CFA for a 72 hour permit. The "fixer" at customs will tell you all sorts of bullshit. Ignore him. Only deal with the guys in uniform.

You can extend the 72 hour permit at the main douane office on Independance square in Dakar. You have to see the head of all douanes in his corner office and the price is high. We paid 50000 CFA total (75 euro) for an 8 day extension for all 4 bikes. And that rate is very negotiable.

Probably changes day to day though.

It seemed like cars older than 5 years without a carnet were a definite no-no. There were plenty of them sitting at the border.

NO carnet needed at Diama
 

I crossed into Senegal at Diama in May 2010, on a 10 year old Harley. No carnet was asked for and there was no problem with the bike being older than 5 years like some say. There was a 10 dollar "tax" for being non-Muslim but it was waived because it was a friday and the guy in a jeep I followed was a Muslim. I was given a 10 day transit pass but not knowing french overstayed and paid 20 dollars when leaving to get the stamp updated. I flew the bike from Dakar to Houston with no issues.
