Route to Dakar to Timbuktu
 

Hi all. I´ve parked my bike (an old R100 G/S 1988) in Dakar. I am going to fly back to Senegal in one month or so and ride it to the Gambia or Mali. I´d love to ride to Timbuktu and dogon country.

Is there any one who has done that trip recently? How about security on the road? I mean, terrorist and thieves. I assume the risk of crashing and illness, that is part of the adventure, but the chance of being kidnapped is just a danger you´d better avoid.

I was in Mali in January. You can go to Timbuktu and to Gao on the highway normally without any trouble. Sometimes east of Sevaré they will suggest an escort.
North of Gao and Timbuktu is not recommended.
Drive in daylight.
The piste Douentza - Timbuktu was rough last time I was there. Have fun!
