ride sudan
 

I've tried to search for this, but results were not clear.....my wife and i are going rtw in october, we plan to cross sudan but we are doubting the practicalities of being able to cross on a 1150gs with all the kit and a 35l fuel tank.
any comments?

which route are you planning? and when are you planning to be there?

the west is still out for now.

from Egypt, there's 600km of soft sand and sandy tracks, but you could take the train while your wife rides ;-)

the rest of the way, you can go on tar except for a section to Ethiopia that would be tough in the wet season.

from CAR, check www.mobilemedics.org.uk from "west to east possible again". it sounds hard going and 35 litres may not give you the necessary range.

Thanks for that, actually it's only 30l that we'll have, but i guess we could carry a bucket!

We aim to be in Sudan for December..ish, we've heard good things about the nile route, although following the railway line has it's advantages, we'll probably do that.

An alternative if you are concerned about the soft sections on the crossing in northern sudan would be to transit through Saudi - they will only give a three day transit visa but the roads are excellent and then get a ferry from Jeddah to Saukin in Sudan.

thanks for that Toby, a good suggestion, although it brings up one question...do I need to be worried about the soft sections?, I mean how bad are they really?

with 30 litres, the soft bits are very long! 300+ km and it was the only place I got low 30's mpg compared with 50-60 most of the time
