Rent or buy ?
 

I’m looking for any info about renting or buying a motorcycle for a trip through South Africa and Namibia this winter.
When riding in India I’ve used a buy back scheme, is there anything similar?

Have a look at the UKGSER website - specifically this thread which details the purchase of a motorcycle in Congo.

Also watch the latest series (series 5) of Itchy Boots on You Tube as she has recently bought a Honda in South Africa to allow her to continue her travels. She goes through the purchase process in detail in the first couple of episodes. Here is a link to the first one of the series.

Hi, I'm Drumacoon Lad on UKGSER and the guy who bought the bike in Congo. I'm just packing and preparing for a trip tomorrow, so have limited time to comment. I gave that bike away in Tanzania and considering buying another in SA or Namibia in January.

I also saw the Itchy Boots video of her buying a bike in SA and getting it registered with the help of a dealer. This was a surprise, as I've always heard you need an SA address etc, however Noraly probably has more influence than others.

Guide to purchasing a motorcycle in SA

Hi all

I have a kitted out 2014 XT660z in South Africa which I had ‘sold’ to another traveller but it appears to have fallen through due to covid stuff as of yesterday.

I am rethinking options so if anyone wants to explore the art of the possible drop me a PM. Bike is is my brother’s name (and garage) - he lives in the winelands near Cape Town. Happy to explore a sale or potentially a sale and buy back type approach.

Of course it depends on the period of time for which you plan to travel....
I searched the web for companies renting out bikes in SA as I had planned a 3-week trip early next year. Thanks to Omicron I postpone it doh It's not much cheaper than in Europe. The best bets were:
- Sama Tours were I checked out the F700GS
- Dual Sport and Adventure were the best bet was a 1-cyl Ténéré
For three weeks this would be ok, but for a longer time it would be better to either buy a bike locally or freight your own bike to SA.
