Overlanders accommodation in Cape Town

Where do you stay with a landy in Cape Town?

None of the backpackers I found seemed to have any parking space so am currently stuck in a camping site 25km out of town.

I guess there isn't anywhere better, but thought I'd ask I case i missed a trick??

Thanks in advance....

Accommodation in South Africa

Roaming Yak,

Not much in the South African section, but if you do find anything please feel free to recommend or not.

It depends if you want to camp or not.

If you want to stay in a room and just need secure parking in the city, Cape Town Backpackers has off-street parking, but I doubt they will let you pitch your roof tent in the car park. It is a couple of blocks from Long St.

There is a camp site in Bellville (northern suburbs of Cape Town), it is called Hardekraaltjie. It is not the best location, nor in a scenic area, but it is a bit closer than 25km from from town. Haven't stayed there myself so can't say whether it's good or not...

I just saw this place on my Garmin maps too...

Chapmans Peak Caravan Park on Noordhoek Drive (close to the intersection with Silvermine Road and Noordhoek drive.

S34 06.025 E18 22.824

This place will be a lot nicer and scenic than the first place I mentioned...

Let us know what they are like if you stay there

Thanks guys,

I'm in a campsite now - they are all well out of town though. I was hoping for something a little closer to town though as having to pack up and find safe parking in town each day is a pain compared to strolling down the street whilst the security guards of the backpackers (hopefully) mind the landy.

Also being in a windy rainy campsite on your own is a bit boring compared to sitting inside warm walls whilst using wifi ;-)

Thanks Matt, I tried there but it wasn't suitable....

I can point you in two directions:

Cape Town Backpackers Kapstadt Cat's remember about parking, but really nice place to stay.

Accommodation in South Africa - Where To Stay This will give you loads of options!

I stayed at the Ashanti Lodge. They don't have secure parking per se but there's a nightguard who sits at the gate all night long, and if you park right in front of the hostel he'll keep and eye on your car.

The place is pretty nice as well. Walking distance to City Bowl (15 minutes, but a pleasant walk though Company Gardens), communal kitchen with fridge, pool. You can pitch your tent in the crowded camping area behind the building for 75 Rand a night, if I remember correctly.

The Cape Town Backpackers in Kappstadt is a nice place, but they don't allow roof tents, and I'm not sure you would want to in their car park anyway. It is also quite expensive unless you get there on one of their intermittent half price deals.

There isn't really anywhere to my knowledge in or around the city bowl.

There are a couple of places down towards Llandudno that allow roof tents, but again, you're looking at 15-30 minutes drive from the centre of the city. It's pretty down there though!

Sorry, useless post.

Really sad to park off-street.

I would not park off-street in Cape town (city)

1 or 2 night might be okay, but you certainly may run into trouble if you have anything valuable inside the car.

Birdy 26 Oct 2010 13:18

I'll second that.

Steve, did I write a couple of articles for your magazine? About a Uk to Cape Town on a Honda 125? I lived in Bo Kaap and you came to our house to pay? Or am I thinking of a different person?

If so, small world, if not, sorry for getting you confused!

Thanks all, having to make do with a campsite out of town. At least I have plenty of room out here even if other campers frown heavily whenever I drill a few holes ;-)
