Ngorongoro to Massai Mara on Bike

2 Attachment(s)
Hey There,

my girlfriend and me planning a trip a trip from Kenya to SA in 2017 (June/July + 3 -4 Month time to get the travel done) with our Bikes. (KTM 1190R Adevnture and BMW G650GS)
By now we are checking the possibillities fromNgorongoro to Massai Mara, see attached track.
Our question:
Is this part of road rideable? - Anyone did recently?
In my paper map there ist a (secondary road) mentioned from Sonjo (Tansania) to the C12 in Kenya.
Neither track4africa nor other online maps are showing (at least parts) of the road.
A few kilometers after Olmesutye the roads ends on Openstreetmap based card.

ist there a way?
Is the border on this road possible to pass between Tansania and Kenya?
any advice is welcome...
Thx
Anja / Carsten

First of all, motorbikes are not allowed in National Parks or game reserves in Kenya or Tanzania. Furthermore, below are the border crossings between the two countries. Please note that there is no border crossing open between the Serengeti NP and the Maasai Mara (Sand River is NOT open).

Sirari/Isebania
Namanga
Oloitokitok
Taveta
Lunga-Lunga/Horo-Horo

Any other minor track you might have found on your various maps are not official border crossings and are therefore not a viable route.

Hey Wazungu,

thx for your answer.
I am aware that bike are not allowed in NP in Kenya and Tansania.
As far as i saw the planned route ist not passing any NP.
Plan for this is either renting a 4WD our being part of an organized trip.

The attached Pic shows a secondary road (the yellow one) passing the border, east of Serengeti.
I understood there is border crossing at this point.
Which route would you recommend to travel from Ngorongoro to Mara?
Thx a lot.
Cheers and regards Carsten

As I said, that is not an official border crossing. That piece of land east of the Serengeti is the Loliondo Game Reserve, and south of the Loliondo Game Reserve is the Ngorongoro Conservationa Area. The no motorbike rule applies in all this land.

From Ngorongoro to the Maasai Mara - in a vehicle not a motorbike - is either:

1. Ngorongoro - Arusha-Namanga-Nairobi-Narok-Maasai Mara
2. Ngorongoro-Serengeti-Serengeti Western Corridor-Sirari border crossing-Kisii-Sotik-Bomet-Maasai Mara.

Both are long ways and will take a few days.

Thx.

Ok, so it looks like Arusha-Namanga and further North.
Sorry but one more Question:
in June, will it be possible to leave the road at Maili Tisa follow the road to Magadi and further onto the C12?

Again thx.
Anja & Carsten

No. There is no road over the Ngurumans from Lake Magadi to the Loita Plains. Lake Magadi is a soda lake, very hot, remote and no where to get fuel.

There is however, a rough track from Kajiado to Corner Baridi on the south end of the Ngong Hills. But don't wild camp anywhere along this track as there could be security issues. Also depends on the rains.

OK.

Thx for your advise.
