Mali and Nigeria crossing

I 'm going to cross this 2 countries by motorbike in the route to South Africa. Someone say these are enough dangerous, so it's important go straight for the main street and don't do a lot of stops. Is it true?
Has anyone ever crossed these countries recently?

Yes, I am in Mali right now, no problem at all, I came from South Africa so I also crossed Nigeria a month ago, apart from crazy drivers it's fine.
I ride a KLR .
Cheers

Didier, where in Mali did you go? We are going from Mauritania to Keyes to avoid Rosso and Diama and find an easier border crossing into Senegal. I heard about the recent terrorist raid on a tourist camp near Bamako. Did you spend time around Bamako, any security issues?

I am on my way to Bamako today, will be there around lunch time.
I was coming from Burkina Faso, I went to Djenné and Dogon country. No security issues that I noticed, there were a couple of gunshots in Djenné the morning that I left but it was just one guy who shot another one, didn't kill him though. It scared me a bit.

By the way where are you right now? We could meet up somewhere if you want more infos. I haven't meet any overlanders since Congo.

Diama crossing into Senegal was a bit of a hassle but beautiful riding and if you can't get out of the bridge toll, it's not expensive. Don't not go through there for fear of the hassle. It's harmless.

We crossed into Mali at Keyes. Was easy. We wild camped on our way to Bamako. The Sleeping Camel is the place to stay in Bamako. Great guys and a good oasis. Lots of UN folk drink there so good for security updates.

Idi Roko border from Benin to Nigeria was a genuine pleasure the officers there were great. We heard all kinds of stories, but it was a pleasant surprise.

Check out the Belfast-Cape Town post in Sub Saharan Africa for more specific details on our trip.

There was the incident in Ouagadougou this week though that is quite troubling. We never went through there, but sad to hear.

Have fun!!!
