trip tattoo ?

Wow, you maybe started a new hype here...

http://www.petoparis.com/images/stor...ike/tattoo.jpg

[Hope you don't have to divers too much from your planned route]

Martynbiker 26 Dec 2007 11:32

i hope you make it.......

Have you ever ridden your bikes offr oad with ALL that stuff strapped to them? It seems a LOT of stuff......

I reckon your gonna wish you had left half or most of it behind.

The old Backpackers rule applies: every 100 grams carried feels like a Kilo by the end of the day. Im betting thre gonna be a trail of fishing weigts, waffle irons, and tripods (use a rock, or the bike) across Africa!

Best wishes though

Martyn

mikeb8man 27 Dec 2007 06:04

I hope we make it too....

Yeah, it is alot hay....we have actually halved quite a great deal now
though but still have yet to get to the packing part...
glad you like the tattoo....
would be nice if we stuck to that route, it being a tattoo for life and everything...(still a bit scary having one)
any specific bits of info for the east coast
or zambia/angola?
thanks
mike

jim 27 Dec 2007 06:53

Yeowzis!

I lost concentration after item 89... You really need to seriously reconsider your list guys! Thats just crazy, even half of that is crazy... its going to make your trip a drag man.

I hope you scale down and have a blast!
Jim

Martynbiker 27 Dec 2007 08:09

Dude, reconsider the list even more!

Mike, its like this. HONESTLY 75% of what you have there you will not use.
PLEASE, so you don't have the worst, most miserable ride of your life, trim it down to even less. ( harmonicas and Brai griddles are not essential).
then pack it up.
Then go ride it off road!!!! HARD! then ride it on road HARD.

then go home, chuck away the crap you decide is too heavy and you can do without, then repeat test 1 off road.....

You will be thanking me half way across Africa!
the conversation will go like this.

"Dad..........., pant,........ grunt, :censored::censored::censored: ow,............ grunt,........... you ...................know............... that............ Martynbiker............guy..............off....... ........the..............HUBB?.......grunt, pant,......... pant, ........pant.........:censored:..:censored:....... .:censored:, well......he was right .........about, ........pant, .......pant,... grunt,. the weight!?

Get it sorted BEFORE you leave Mike:thumbup1:

Thanks for your support again Lee.. .... I learned the HARD way... I had a packing list like that a about 10 years ago.
which is why I feel qualified to offer Mike such strong advice.
I can go a couple of weeks on a small holdall sized bag now...:thumbup1:

That is why we are all here on the HUBB, to help each other have a better experience, to exchange differing views, experiences and tips that have made our Journeys more pleasant and to advise others on the pitfalls that made our journeys Hell.

True, true, normally I would let him John.... if it were something small or a local trip, but it looks like this is a trip of a LIFETIME for him & his Dad.
I would give my nuts to have done a trip by Bike like that with my Dad,( but he just isn't into Bikes.... sure he feigns Interest now and then...) For Mike this is Special, why else would he have had the Tattoo n everything?
I just want him to have it the BEST it can be for him.

Shaved off

Hey Mike

I have had a look at your list mate and have shaved some things off that you don't really need. Remember it's Africa and you can get this stuff along the way if you really need it. Listen to Martyn, he does know what he's talking about.

Martyn, you may be able to shave some more off as well?

Cheers guys and enjoy your trip, maybe I will see you up in TZ for a coldie.

Cool looking bikes, Mike.
Some feedback on the neck braces would be great. I'd like to know how comfortable they are for extended use; especially in hot weather.
Have a great trip.

PS Which brace model are you wearing?

Best wishes Dudes.... (your gonna need it! with all that gear....)

palace15 31 Dec 2007 20:46

Do me 50 points for a ditched guitar before day 15 please

Enjoy the trip but why did you copy the packing list from Ewan and Charlie?

Read trip reports ASAP from Chris Scotts Adventure motorcycling website and see how many people advise TRAVEL LIGHT.

Now why do people ask for advice then ignore it, it's beyond me, you probably had reservations about your list or you would not have thought to publish it.

One thing I deff would have kept...the harmonica, I have one but can't play the bloody thing :helpsmilie:

Frank Warner 31 Dec 2007 23:12

The post office is your friend ... as you travel you'll find stuff you don't need .. either give it away or send it home. If you think you'll need it in say 2 weeks time .. post it to yourself about 1 week onwards .. and pick it up there .. saving carrying it, or throwing it away and buying another one later.

A word on the nuts and bolts .. common ones can be bought along teh way .. teh unusual ones may be made at a local machine shop .. the ones you need are those that prevent forward (or even reverse) progress... those are the ones to carry.

Dingo 1 Jan 2008 01:27

Omg!!

Hey there,

You still can't be serious? Trash at least half of it for your own sakes. You are going to ride Africa so you don't need any comforts, get them when you get back. You will appreciate them even more when you return.

Don't forget what happened when you first rode in sand, mud, bog? And this you did without any additional weight on the bike, remember?

And don't forget to think about the bike, I failed my suspension carrying approx 50 - 60 kg in Kenya. Now I don't take anymore than 30 kg with me (Max).

It's Africa, you don't need all that gear and if you do get a local to make it for you.

Anyway good luck to you guys. I am near Tarime in TZ if you come through this way, I will buy you a beer.

Cheers
Ivan

Hey Ivan, just about EVERYBODY has given these guys the same advice!
This is one time you cant put a "wise head on stupid shoulders" there is gonna be a trail of stuff scattered across Africa that some local Guy is gonna be very grateful for.... although what an African is gonna use a neck brace for i cant imagine! ( they look a little 'hot around the collar' to me),

I don't think Mike and his Dad have really thought this one out too well, I WISH THEM BOTH ALL THE BEST and would give anything to have done a trip like that with my Dad, but I hope for the both of them, they listen to SOMEONE before they finally go and just DUMP HALF THAT GEAR!

Good luck guys - actually looking at that photograph above there isn't that much stuff - it's just spread out isn't it! :innocent:

You guys will be just fine - part of the adventure is getting there and discovering whilst you do have your guitar you have in fact forgotten the side stand puck (cough).

Is it an expensive guitar? Is it a travel guitar? If it's cheap and not a travel effort I give it 4 days!

If I took any kind of musical instrument to Russia I'm sure Stace and Patrick would make sure it went 'missing' in the first 4 days.

I fixed the above to make it read correctly Matt! :thumbup1:  Tadah!!
Here it is the ultimate in lightweight gear...... Yes, it's the Titanium Guitar..

Remember the above posted by Mike? well if it Titanium, its not cheap, but its metal so he can still stamp on it, fold it in half and use it as a side-stand puck!

Grant Johnson 1 Jan 2008 15:07

In our "Achievable Dream" DVD and lecture we give on how to ride around the world we tell people that the number one phrase that we get from people on the road is:

"We just sent another box of shit we thought we needed home"

Everyone does it, we've even done it ourselves.

Tip - after two weeks, remove the top layer of stuff you're using in the saddlebags and send the bottom layer home.

Tip before you leave - look at everything, and if you're not really using it daily, leave it. (Except medical - and that you can probably cut way down to crash meds only - there are stores out there for the rest.)

Understand the difference between WANTS and NEEDS. You WANT all the toys and fun stuff, but you don't NEED it.

Have a great trip whatever you take!:D

Martynbiker 1 Jan 2008 15:25

but that requires faith Grant!

That requires Faith! Faith in themselves, something a lot of people don't have! Some people rely on 'stuff' and possessions to feel 'comfortable'. As if 'Comfortable' is surrounded by piles of crap they really don't need, and they certainly wont be 'comfortable' lugging an extra 10 kilos of crap through mud and bog and it gets boring after a while packing all those 'comforts' away each morning! ( Right Grant?) As you said, if you don't use it, post it home or give it to someone who will appreciate it ( or wonder what the hell it it?)
The simple way is always the best way. Travel Light, the less 'Stuff' you have to worry about the more you can enjoy your Journey.
Look at Ray Mears, a Rucksack, Tarp, hammock, Knife, little else......

Light...... is Right.

P.S. Does the fact your a Moderator stop you having a bet on the fate of the Guitar then?:innocent:

Mike, you are half way there with having a sense of humour! If you lose anything don't lose that:thumbup1:

Can you get a drum kit on as well...anywhere? Your trip song could then be the old McCartney/wings song 'Band on the run' although Martynbiker and I know a fellow hubber that may like to join you(in a sidecar?) He was 4 days a little banned:rofl: but thats an infraction inducing story...sorry uzi.

Have a great trip you deserve it.........:clap::clap:

Guitar on a bike.......You make joke!

Mike,

Mmmm, you do sound like a Kaburu mate. I hope your trip goes well and you get to enjoy it. Still can't see why you asked the question about luggage though if your not going to listen to any advice from people who have done it?

This thread has been good for me though, I have learnt what not to try and carry with me and have already got rid of "stuff" that I am carrying. Thanks for the advice guys I have learnt a lot as well as getting rid of my hard luggage!

Cheers.

mikeb8man 27 Mar 2008 15:30

Made it!

Hey guys,

Well, after 20,000km and 85 days on the road...we have made it home...
And with my guitar in one piece!!! hahahah and the harmonica made it too!! heheh
And you were all right...we ended up sending back two boxes full of stuff...so yes you were right and we were wrong...BUT...i now know for next time...
I hope you managed to catch a few stories or photos from our trip through South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Namaibia and back home...
Anyway, thanks for the laughs and advice...
Now to just plan a west coast trip with the mother...hmmm somehow think this might take a little harder work...

CornishDaddy 27 Mar 2008 16:49

Would be interesting to know

....have you got a list of what you sent home? Would be interesting to all comers to this thread I think

teflon 28 Mar 2008 00:49

Concerning spanners - may I suggest box spanners cut in half? There's no need to take sizes you don't need - a 9mm with an 8mm, an 11mm with the 10mm, etc. For the price, they're practically disposable. New holes can be drilled to take the bars, or even a screw driver - though I would suggest using the bars. Just check there's enough headroom and turning space on ALL fixings to get to the next 'flat' if space is tight. They'll be 'custom-made' for your bike and less than half the weight of ring spanners. It's just a thought.

Draper Box Spanner

Might be easier - a photo of what you left with .. and what you came home with ...

Have to do that myself .. note to self - photo of gear going out - unpacked on floor .. and another one when returned - unpacked and unwashed on floor .. to resembel 1st photo. Could be a good calander photo sequence? err and anotehset of phots showing teh packed bike .. both outwards and inwards bound.

Teflon - A note on the box spanners - I don't find them as strong as the ring spanners.

I found that, if the threads are not sticking in regular use and the spanner is a good fit, there's very little strain put on the tool itself. I also find them extremely fast to use. It's what we feel comfy with I suppose.

mikeb8man 28 Mar 2008 07:41

on it soon

hey guys,
yeah will make a list of what we sent back etc.. with some pics...
the waves are pumping here so need to tend to the most important things first hay :)
