Latest Diesel Prices, West Africa (Guinea, S Leone etc)

Hi Guys,

Just got to Ghana with my group going through Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra leone, Ivory Coast, and Ghana.

Latest diesel prices if needed by anybody (all taken between October and December 2012):

Morocco - 8.3 Dirhams
Western Sahara - 6.2 Dirhams
Mauritania - 375 Ougiya
Senegal - 780 upto 840 CFA (expensive)
Gambia - Lost the receipt but around 40 Dalasi
Guinea Bissau - 720 CFA
Guinea - 9500 Guinea Francs
Sierra Leone - 4500 Leones
Ivory Coast - 615 CFA
Ghana - 1.72 Cedis

So avoid filling up in Senegal and Guinea Bissau if you can! These prices stayed the same throughout the country, Total seem to be everywhere at the moment and they have a standard price. Engen around alot to and Shell quite common, diesel seems pretty clean changed the filters twice since UK and really not too bad at all.

Any ideas how they might treat you if you cross say from Sierra Leone at $1.05/liter to Guinea at $1.35/liter with full jerry cans? With a $0.30 spread if I have 80 liters on board in jerry cans that's a $24 dollar savings. Obviously my main tank will be full to the brim!

I have no border crossing experience with a vehicle in Africa yet but in Central America they rarely checked the vehicle for what you had on board. So long as you paid everyone you were usually good to go.

It depends on the saving if its worth doing....an extra 80 ltrs is quite heavy so if youre carrying it around for a while is it worth the saving as you're heavier and will drink more fuel.

But in answer to your question, never once in West Africa have been asked how much fuel Im carrying. Regularly cross those borders recently with upto 600 Ltrs in our trucks tanks and also some jerrys too. They dont seem concerned by us, but we are a big overland truck with passengers on board so they do get distracted by us all and forget to check things!
