Anyone been here? Is a guide mandatory or can you wander the area alone?

I was there last month. Extremely salt water, fun to float. I didn't really wander the area, so I cannot tell if a guide would be mandatory. Wouldn't think so, though. You can camp at chez Salim, if you're in for that, it's a nice place.

I visited Feb2011, no need for guide. You'll find some villages and salt workers nearby.

Reaching the beach was our main challenge due to soft sand and heavy bikes.

Was there in 2006 and was looking forward to seeing it after the Eurosport film from the helicopters filming The Dakar, when I got there, I realised it just looked muddy and was better viewed from my armchair on TVdoh

We have been there and absolutely no guide needed and a lot of things to see around and in the region.
