I'm trying to organise to get My bike shipped up to Dar Es Salaam in December to meet up with Bevan who is leaving from South Africa this week..We'll then travel from Dar Es Salaam to Nairobi where he will carry on and I'll crate the bike up again and get it and myself back to South Africa..my question is do I need a Carnet?? seeing as I have a return ticket from Nairobi and I'll cetainly have documentation proving that I intend to ship my bike back to SA from Nairobi??
Any other documentation I should be aware of??

Ask the AA or RAC or that equivalent. Brandts (sp?) do a good book on Africa Overland. Just go to any travel bookstore, they should have it, or least have it in the catalogue. It gives info on Carnets, places to stay, visa's and cost of gas.

When we came south about 8 months ago travellers coming from the south needed one to cross the main Tanzanian / Kenyan border. However entering from Ethiopia we didn't seem to need one. The travellers coming from the south had to leave their vehicle on the border and come to Nairobi to get a Carnet before returning to collect the vehicle. Seems to be very hit and miss as to whether requirement is enforced or not.
