Kenya Info Please

Hello from Canada. In Jan. I'll be travelling throughout Kenya on a rented bike. I'd appreciate any information on roots, gear, safety, personal stories etc.

Thanks

I went from Moyale (Ethiopia border) to Nairobi via Wajir and Garissa, then via Eldoret to Uganda, then back to Nairobi, then Mombasa and south to TZ.
Moyale to Garissa is sandy track and hot hot hot. You can stay in Buna, Wajir and Habaswein on the way. No beer round these parts. May be safer going thru Marsabit - check when you're there. Garissa to NRB is tarmac. Nairobi is great! Upper Hill Campsite is a laugh and the grub is good.
Eldoret is worth stopping in for Naiberi River Campsite. Huge new bar!
The beaches south of Mombasa are great. I went to Tiwi and stayed at Twiga Lodge. Excellent...

Thanks for the reply - It's good to hear that "Nairobi is great" most of what I read on the net suggests that everyone in Nairobi ends up shot or mugged. Nevertheless I take what I read on the net with a grain of salt and try to keep it in perspective. Same with your ventures in the Northern part of the country. Did you do the northern ride in a convey or solo?

Thanks again _- I appreciate your input

I did the northern part on my own - because I'm damn hard! Or rather, because the convoy situation is farcical...

Er... forgot to mention I did the second half of Moyale-Garissa in the back of a truck after falling off once too often.

Hi CTB,

Sould you please post details of what bike you're renting and where you're renting it from? And the details of the rental (deposit etc.)?

Thanks.

The bike is being rented from these people http://www.discover-kenya-tours.de/h...le_rental.html but the arrangements were made by http://www.admo-tours.com/ This guy apparently offers organized off-road tours in Kenya as well http://www.motorbike-safari.com/. Niether option is cheap but for a quick fly in and out it's convenient. Hope that helps

P.S there is also an outfit that offers organized tours in Nambia and Uganda as well
