Have you ridden across Africa? Check in here!
I thought it would be useful to have a thread where riders who've done a trans-Africa trip (or who are currently on the road) can check in and/or post a link to their blog. This should be a useful resource for people who are planning trips of their own, and also useful for knowing who is currently on the road.
Please post your route, when you started and finished, as well as a link to your blog if you have one. Also, if you know of any blogs by people who've done the ride, please post those links. Cheers! |
I'm half way through - left Joburg in April and went through Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and now i'm sitting at Jungle Junction in Nairobi fixing up the car (old Toyota Hilux - i know, not a bike ;) ), waiting for Ethiopian visa and planning the Northern Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Jordan and Israel.
I'm posting video updates with b-roll from the road on Trekking Pole | Cape Town, South Africa to Deadhorse, Alaska and regular updates on https://www.facebook.com/trekkingpolecom . I will be here for the next two weeks (wonderful broadband!) and happy to answer all questions people have on routes, conditions, parks etc. I also want to go to Ethiopia through Maralal, Lake Turkana and Omo route but will be more comfortable doing it with another car alongside. The word out here is that the conventional Nairobi to Moyale road is almost all tarmacked and simply... boring. On Turkana route you can see the lake, camel derby (!) and stand on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. Anyone interested? |
Hi
I did Poland to Cape Town through West Route in mid 2013 alone on DR650SE without CDP. If you need any info let me know. szym_m (at) o2.pl Regards! Szymon |

Hello Jordan,
I am leaving Spain heading South in ten days. Looking for info about VISAS, only worried about the really difficult ones, have read horrible things about entering Angola. Any tip from you with the countries you have passed so far? |
Currently in West Africa
I'm in west Africa right now. In Togo. My blog address is at.
Congo-Zaire or Bust. Adv Riding across Africa. My advice for anyone thinking about this route is get your DC visa at home as well as your Nigerian. I was very lucky and got my Nigerian visa but my travel partner has been denied now 3 times. We only have Benin to try if this does not work he has to send him poss port home. Because the area has become a little unstable it the north of Nigeria they have clamped down to make it harder for people to cross. DRC has also changed its rules in last 4 months and we might be sending passports home for visas. Even as an Australian with no embassy at home I've been denied 4 times. All said get visa in Europe. Hope this info helps. |

Ahoj Szymon. We are a couple from Slovakia travelling on West side Africa towards Cape Town. Curently we are on Maroco nere Mauritanian border. We heard about a tar road from Mauritania to Mali. Do you know enothing about this road? Thru which cities go this road? And what is the point of entry in Mali? .....we have in plan to go this route: Mauritania-Mali-Burkina Faso-Benin-Nigeria-Cameroon-Gabon-Congo-DRC-Angola-Namibia-South Africa..... and back to Botswana-Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya-Ethiopia-Sudan-Egypt-crossing by Ferry to Turkey-Bulgaria-Romania-Hungary and Slovakia..... Any info can help....Thanks |
We travelled South Africa to Europe via east coast last year.
On our website you can find overlander info, both gpx files and excel with information (go to pics-section, links are there) |
I did London to Cape Town (west coast) and back again (east coast) in 2012.
Morocco Mauritania Senegal Gambia Guinea Mali Burkina Faso Ghana Togo Benin Nigeria Cameroon Gabon Republic of Congo DRC Angola Namibia South Africa Botswana Zambia Mozambique Tanzania Kenya Ethiopia Sudan Egypt Turkey |
Fellow riders - any recent updates on visas? Specifically: Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya, Algeria.
What is the easiest route for a US citizen from Kenya to Tunisia or Morocco? I need to get into Europe. cheers |
Heading north from Cape Town and currently in Rwanda. Ethiopian visa is still a problem, no recent reports of any of the African country embassies issuing them instead all say get it through your home country. I personally was refused at Pretoria and Harare in last couple of months so my passport is currently on its way back to Australia via DHL (it's going to be a very expensive visa by the time I get it back).
I'm still trying to work out how I'll finally get my bike to Europe. Frieght out of Egypt seems possible but very painful experience. Option of going Sudan - Saudi currently not available as Saudis are not issuing visa due to spat with Iran ( I know of somone currently stuck in Sudan because of this). Oh the joys of travel. Hi Navalarchitect Hope you are enjoying the trip. When are you expecting to hit Cairo? I am likely to want to fly/ship my bike back to Europe 1st week of Sept 2016. If that fits with your plans let me know and we can explore if there is a batch deal to be done! I had a quote of £1295 to London. Cheers Andy |
Hi Andy,
Definitely am enjoying the trip. I have to do it a bit ahead of your planned date due to carnet running out (plus need to go back to work to earn some more travel funds). Looking like I'll ship out in April (anyhow else reading likely to be shipping at this time? ) Where did you get your quote from / do you have any contacts in Egypt.? All the best Martin Sent from my SM-P350 using Tapatalk |
Quote was from James Cargo Martin - drop me a pm with your email address and I'll send on my email exchanges with them if it would be helpful. They suggested i get in touch again 6 weeks before my 'shipping' date.
I don't have an Egypt contact hence using these guys to sort. Cheers Andy |
I did the east route with two friends in 2014.
Starting from Frankfurt/Germany our course took us through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece to Istanbul/Turkey. After an air transfer to Sudan we crossed Ethiopia and Kenia all the way down to the border to Tanzania. We didn’t enter Tanzania yet but took a detour back north circling the Lake Victoria via Uganda and Rwanda. From Rwanda we continued south again through Tanzania to Malawi. From there we headed south west crossing Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia before we finally arrived in South Africa where we reached our final goal Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope. You Can find a detailed route and infos on our blog. Cheers Daniel |

I am interested in shipping the bike as well. |
Voodoochile.se is the single most useful blog/resource I've found for doing a west coast Africa trip (and he's soon heading up the east coast). There are numerous practical sections for border crossings etc, as well as a blog. If you're traveling along the west coast, I would definitely check this out:

I'll be in Uganda the next three weeks, then heading south. Unless I return to Kenya and then head south. ;-) I'm working on a film, Rallying for A Wild Life, that shows how motorcycles/bodas are used for wildlife/conservation in East Africa. It's star-studded including Ted Simon and the usual crowd of misfits. ;-) If anyone hears of a relevant project OR is volunteering at some animal kind of place LET ME KNOW! I don't get the bike for a few weeks but when I do.... :scooter::funmeterno:
NavalArchitect, you still heading north? |
Yes I am. Currently just left Murchison Falls NP in Uganda and heading generally in Kampala direction before going into Kenya. Hope to cross to Ethiopia around about 20th Feb (assuming the Ethiopian embassy in Australia issue the visa in a next couple of days and then DHL get the passport safely back to me)

Done half of Africa and planning the other half now
I've done the southern half of Africa in 2013, the route was like this:
south africa -> lesotho -> south africa -> swaziland -> mozambique -> malawi -> tanzania -> kenya -> tanzania -> zambia -> zimbabwe -> botswana -> namibia -> south africa Now I'm planning to do another trip in 2017, I'd like to go down from Dublin (Ireland) to Capetown along the West Coast in the first half of '17. I know this is still quite far off, and politics can change until then, but what would you guys think what's currently the safest path from Morocco down to Ivory Coast? So far I was thinking to go along the coast down to St Louis (Senegal), then East to Bamako (Mali), and then South to Ivory Coast. That way I'd be skipping Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia which seem rather high risk, and I could also avoid northern Mali which seems very high risk right now. What do you guys think about that plan? |
Africa
We came down the East side from Egypt to South Africabier & now in Namibia heading up the West side !!!:mchappy:

I haven't but I start next week and I'm wondering which stove to take.
I favour a little burner that screws onto a butane bottle. Do they have these screw thread butane cans in Southern Africa. The bayonet sort are no good to me. |

Gbags,
The primus multi fuel is a great compact stove, it's kinda pricy but always works and will burn just about any fuel |
Thanks Machinest.
