Good camping in Dar Es Salaam?
 

Does anyone know a nice and cheap camping in Dar Es Salaam that you could recommend? Maybe we would like to leave our cars a week or so to go to Zanzibar.

We left our car at Sunrise Beach Resort (
:: Sunrise Beach Resort :: ) which is about 7km south of Dar. There is a secure area by the reception, and it was around 3-4000 TZS per day if I recall correctly. The beach and camping are pretty good too. To get into town, there are mini-buses to Kigamboni ferry from which the city is a quick ride.

On the same road as Movinghouse mention take Kikambodi ferry and it's about 5km away is Mikadi Beach resort, also cheap and good camping spots. It's an overlanders spot. S6 49.142 E39 19.252

I was badly electrocuted at sunrise, I recomend all to avoid, even if the spot is nice, the mangement are sub human.

Mikadi is much closer/cheaper to the ferry, lots of shade, owners cool. I spent 3 months there recovering from my sunrise experience. Say hi from Darrin the fried kiwi ;)

Yes southbeach is the place to go. Be carefull there is a one way street on the way to the farry where the police tryed to charge me. The sign is very well hidden:

Kipepeo, Mikadi and Sunrise are all within a few km of each other at South Beach. Best take a quick look at all three and choose. Kipepeo has free internet, Mikada the cheapest long term parking. I haven't stayed at Sunrise though it looked the nicest from outside. They are all very used to overlanders leaving their cars and offer a daily rate.

I'd probably plump for Mikadi. The management are decent and they have some good links with local taxi drivers/tuk tuks. There is a published list of rates for particular journeys, a half day rate, daily rate etc. We took a tuk tuk for the day to go off and source some parts and it sure beat grappling with the traffic in a Land Rover.

Watch out for the one way road the previous poster mentioned. T4A will direct you up it and there is usually a policeman waiting to collect! Just a few hundred meters from the city ferry across to south beach the road you are on alongside the sea becomes a one way street and you have to turn off to the left. It's hard to spot.

We also recommend Mikadi. Just make sure you camp away from the overland truck travelers. The owners are great and can book the ferry tickets for you as well. You just go to the counter at the terminal to pay & pick up your tickets. No price increase for the service. Food at the bar is good as well. Just disregard all the warning signs.
