Going North at Diama is possible.
 

I know of 2 different cars that have done this.
From what we witnessed the problem is on the Mauri side. They have the bio-metric stuff there for the visas but don't appear to use it.
The thing the 2 lots of people had in common was they already had Mauri visas. One a multi entry and the others a visa obtained from somewhere south of Mauri.. I will check that no money changed hands or not and report back..
We also witnessed quite a few turned away and sent to Rosso.

That was the case when I was there a few years back. If you had a multiple-entry visa for Mauritania you could use Diama, I didn't and had to endure the hell of Rosso.

how's the diama road? is it possible for a non 4x4, peugeot stationwagon? without killing it, because id like to sell it in dakar :) but i hate rosso. it went nuts last time there and almost had a fight

I drove it with a Peugeot 205 in January 2015. Once on the dike, you have to go slow slow slow if you do not want to kill your car. Some potholes are realy big. It is easier to drive on the side of the dike if there is no water and no mud. It is smoother and that was no problem at all when we drove it. As you must know, Diama border post is not fun sometime but look like it is a piece of cake compare to Rosso.

If you take the Diama road, and you decide to drive off the 'main' raised section of road through the National Park, you should be very cautious.

The ground is deceptively soft. I have fortunately never been stuck myself, but I have seen quite a few others and it is not nice stuff to get stuck in! :helpsmilie:
