ethiopian driving licence

Does anybody have some information about bringing your own vehicle into Ethiopia? I guess it is not possible to enter Kenia via Southern Sudan, so you have to travel through Ethiopia.

The german Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims that you need an ethiopian driving licence which will only be issued at Addis Abeba. Entering the country it is not allowed to drive your own vehicle from the border to the capital without a local licence.

That sounds pretty wierd to me.doh Does anyone know any details about getting an ethiopean driving licence at the border?

Does anybody know how to bring your own vehicle to Ethiopia overland (coming from Sudan)?

The german Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims, that you will need a ethiopian driving licence, which can only be issued in Addis Abeba. If that is true, it means you need to go to the capital first, get yor local licence there, return to the border and pick up your vehicle there.

Can anybody confirm this wierd information?

It was a few years ago that I was there so my personal experience could be out of date but I have never heard anything about this and foreign ministries have been known to get it wrong in the past.

Nothing like that needed when we entered ethiopia from lake Turkana and exited to Sudan in October 2017.

I also had a very quick look on the Ethiopian page if the German Foreign Office and couldn't immediately see anything relating to your question.

I don't think you have anything to worry about but would be interested in seeing the source if your info to see if it jogs my memory from when we were there.

German plated bike I assume?

Shouldn't have any problems with a temporary import. We came from Djibouti (with CdP) and exited via Turkana piste to stamp out in the middle of nowhere desert they had single handed border man that knew the procedures.

Haven't heard they've changed anything since then.
