Ethiopia - Not accepting Carnet!
 

Just read here that Ethiopia is not accepting Carnets for entry and asking for a cash deposit.

Does anyone know anything about this?

We are hoping, fingers crossed, that we've managed to get a resolution.
Apparently we can cross any time from tomorrow, though it should be via the main Moyale border, not along Lake Turkana as we had hoped.

Hopefully what we've been told is right: we'll send an update once we're at the border at the end of the week.

This is good news! There's simply no going around Ethiopia overland.

We arrived in Ethiopia today!
In the end we made 1 more phone call to a third official in Ethiopia and he said even this crossing would be fine.

And here we are today !

The entry formalities were dealt with efficiently and in a very friendly way. The whole process took about 20 minutes. No indication that it had been a problem, or that anyone unsure about anything.

They used our carnet to fill out the details on the TIP, but didn't actually stamp the carnet itself. Cost nothing.

Happy to be here and the east side of lake Turkana is a fabulous route, though not the easiest on a bike I expect: sand, volcanic rocks etc!
