We did this road few days ago. Nice road, not in good condition tho. Easy border crossing and passport stamps and customs in Kayes. We felt safe and no escort needed.

Hi Priffe, as you know well the country, do you know if there is Hotel in Kayes and In Selibaby? For Selibaby, i've seen the Hotel de l'amitié, near the airport, but i'm not sure it still works in 2016.

There is a hotel in Selibaby but I prefer to stay across the square, where you can sleep outdoors on carpets mauretania style behind the chicken restaurant. For free if you eat the chicken ;) Shower upstairs. Some wifi even.

In Kayes I stayed at the fancy Kamankole Palace last trip, 40000 CFA. Only comfortable beds I've seen in Kayes, AC and breakfast. Burden sweated it out in their parking lot, 3000 I think? No AC or breakfast but peaceful and safe.
There are other hotels but several are also brothels :nuke:
You can stay at the mission by the railroad, same block as the police station where you get the laissez-passer. I prefer to put my tent on the roof as the rooms arent that good.
