Enter Ghana, no Carnet.

Hi guys.

I'm planning on entering Ghana next week from Burkina Faso with no carnet. I'm riding on a 24 year old moped that's worth around £350 and its been fine so far. One of my friends though, riding a 125 motor cross with a carnet entered Ghana this morning at Leo and said it would be impossible to enter there without one...? I don't like the word 'impossible.'

Does anyone here have any recent experience of getting into Ghana without a carnet or recommend which would be the best border to try. I know that generally its the smaller borders that are best but I've heard that the one at Po give out the passavant very easily.

Cheers!

If you look at the Michelin map there is a borderpost marked in the north-west, close to the border of Ivory-coast in a town called "Hamale".

I managed to enter Ghana in the end of 2011 without CDP nor temporary import permit, means they also didn´t put anything in my passport. They wanted insurance ( the one from Burkina is NOT valid but you can get it in Bobo oder Ouaga. Compare the prices, I went to 5 offices in Bobo-Diolasso and the prices differed as much as 20$ ) and international drivers licence and did ask for the Carnet but I pretended not to know what this is and kept waving my insurance in their faces ( they kept asking for the yellow document, the insurance had the same colour hehe ) so I guess at some point when they saw my 1978 125cc Vespa they got tired of me. We´re talking about 10 minutes on the border, arrived in the evening so maybe that helped. You have quite some distance to cover before you reach the first town ( thinking of your small fuel tank which probably isn´t that much bigger than mine on the vespa ) with no petrol stations, so try to stock up in Burkina.

Enjoy, it´s a beautiful route you´re going to take and definately take that rough piste through the Mole-National-Park to watch the elephants and enjoy that remote jungle-place, you´ll end up on the main-road to Tamale after all and can continue to Kumasi !!!

Does the vespa traveller that appears on your photos have a blog ?

cheers,
Chris

There have been a number of reports of people managing to enter Ghana with no carnet as the border Chris mentions.

However, in our experience, entering Ghana at the main border crossings with Ivory Coast, Togo, and Burkina Faso, they will ask you for the CDP. We always have a truck so perhaps they are less stringent for smaller vehicles.

Sorry I've taken so long to reply! Been a bit distracted of late.

I made it into Ghana without a carnet no problem. Entered through Hamaile. They asked fr one straight away but my back up plan was to explain that it's impossible for me to get a carnet because my bike isn't worth enough money, it has to be worth £1000 over over. (which is the half truth) And after explaining that I'm trying to get around the world on this bike, raising funds for water aid etc the chief of customs was so impressed that he gave me the temporary import permit completely exempt of all charges! I think even the locals pay the equivalent of ten euros. I managed to get the number from my invalid insurance put onto the form as valid insurance also.

Great success! :D

This is the vespa guys blog also; https://worldvespa.wordpress.com

Cheers mate.
