Health minister restricts travel from Ebola-hit countries

People traveling from Ebola-hit countries in West Africa will not be allowed into Namibia until further notice, the Minister of Health and Social Services Dr Richard Kamwi announced on Saturday.

All visitors to Namibia from West Africa will undergo strict screening at ports of entry, including the Hosea Kutako International Airport, and harbour at Walvis Bay, as well as the Oshikango border post north of the country.

Kamwi advised Namibian citizens to postpone their visits to the West Africa countries of Liberia, Nigeria, Guinea and Sierra Leone currently battling the Ebola epidemic which has claimed over 1000 lives.

"I, therefore, repeat my advice that no Namibian citizen, permanent resident as well as those on temporary residency should travel to the Ebola-affected countries, he reiterated.

He said visiting Ebola-affected countries and returning to Namibia will put people at risk of contracting the disease.

"We do not need to panic, but let us not be complacent. Let us ensure that our emergency responses systems are well functioning and protective medical equipment are well stocked in case the unlikely event of the virus coming south," Kamwi said.

It also seems according to today's BBC news that south Africa is imposing restrictions at its borders.

Hi all,

I have been traveling in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland and Botswana for the last weeks. At the SA border posts you will be screened when it is evident that you travelled through Ebola countries, and you will be refused entry when this was recently (I have 2 passports, so had no problems).

I was fortunate enough to have passed the Guineas, etc., before the outbreak. I wonder how overlanders who are in the region now are managing?
On the other hand: for us overlanders it means changing plans or aborting the trip. For the people in the Ebola countries it is far worse!

Cheers from Botswana,

Gee
