Dakar Shipping
 

We will be arriving in Dakar in the next few days and intend to ship our 4x4 back to the UK. Does anyone have any advice or experience on how best to do this from Dakar? Also what is a reasonable price? we would be very grateful for any information and help.

Quite a long Time ago , a ro-ro to Roterdam was around 800 Euros. Much much more for a Container (althought that could be shared with more people) . Also containers have substantial clearing & handling surcharges , and will be a nightmare to get the car back in UK.

I think that shipping from Gambia (300Km south of Dakar) is much easier and convenient, let alone they Speak English.

I've used Kamino from Banjul (http://www.kamino.co.uk/) to freight my bike by air and would definitely use them again. I believe they do surface freight. They have an office next to Banjul airport.

Thanks for the advice guys. Sounds like most people think Gambia is the best bet and fortunately we have time to take the car there. However we have not planned to go that far so we have no idea about carnets / insurance / other formalities.

Anything we should know before heading off to the Gambia?

AFAIK there's no requirement for a carnet for The Gambia but of course things change. A couple of years ago the border police asked me if I was planning to sell my bike in the country and were happy with me simply promising not to.

From what I can remember I've only been asked for my passport on entering with a vehicle, but of course you should have some proof of insurance.

I bought insurance (brown card) in St Louis from a small office in the main square on the island - not sure if this is valid for The Gambia. It cost about 20GBP for 3 months.

Registration doc in the form of an International Certificate for Motor Vehicles and driving licence in the form of an International Driving Permit are both available very cheaply from the RAC in the UK.

The small amount of effort in acquiring these documents is worthwhile when you consider the potential hassle of not having them.

IMO Gambia is one the easiest Country to get in .

They dont ask for a Carnet.
Your Senegalese Insurance is valid .
They dont ask for an international driving license.
Police is friendly
They dont even write your car on your passport .
They Speak English ...
Its only 4 hours drive from Dakar
Its much cheaper than Senegal.
It has a trilling car import export industry in which will be really easy to find a way to re-export back a car.
Banjul/Serekunda have a really interesting nightlife
Lots of Britons there.
