Crossing from Mauritania into Mali

any recommendation on routes and tips to cross from Mauritania into Mali??

We went from Kiffa to Kayes on a non-existent road in 2009 on bikes. There was a track between villages and a river crossing. It was a super fun ride. Crossed the border without noticing - were stopped about 50km later and suggested to "check in" to the country. Can't remember if we actually bothered doing it.
