Congo / Cameroon visa in Nigeria- fees in Central CFA,Western CFA,Nigerian currency??
Someone mentioned (cannot find now), that one of the embassies in Nigeria wanted payment in CFA and there was disagreement over the exchange rate.
1. Was the payment to be made in Western CFA or Central CFA? 2. Was the disagreement over the exchange rate (a) from Nigerian currency to CFA? or (b) from Western CFA to Central CFA? Thanks. |
I can't answer your exact question - but seem to remember you could get cfa from the money changers opposite the main entrance to the Sheraton Hotel. Not at a fantastic rate, but solved some kind of cfa problem for some when I was there....

We paid in Western CFA at the Cameroun embassy in Abuja. I remember my fellow traveller telling them it's a big joke they want to be paid in a currency that is not the currency of their own country. I still had some west CFA, my friends had to look for hours to find some. What can you say TIA! ( This is Africa)

Thanks, will carry extra WESTERN CFA.
Anyone ever convert their Western CFA to Central CFA? Was it 1 for 1, minus say 0.5% or 1% "commission"? |

Later on in Abuja i was able to change the remaining 1:1, cause i used the same dealer where i normally change euro to everything else and both cfas are dealt with here. |
We got mostly that rate what was near the internet exchange rate. Just on the west sahara border the guy`s don't wants to trade for the showed rate.
We used an APP "Currency" on our iphone, who shows the current (from the last update) rate details (buy /sell). We shows that to the trading-guys, type the amount in - and gets the correct exchange rate. Not often we had to discuss about. We can show with the app - that this is the "current" value of the money, because the date of the last update is also showed. Surfy |

I just got my Cameroonian vias in Calabar last week and it was smooth. When I asked if I could pay in Naira it was no problem and the rate was fine (although in their favour). He told me I could also pay in USD if I wanted.
Now, it doesn't help at all here but they asked for Central CFA at the embassy so I'm assuming if you gave Western CFA they'd take a small fee because they would need to exchange it themselves. The rate may be the same, but that doesn't mean they are interchangable. Just like trading USD and CAD which are essentially equal, the changer has to take a profit. Quote:
