Chad/Sudan Border
Has anybody travelled through Western Sudan and used the Chad border recently. I know the British FCO advice is advising against travel there. are th troubles in El Fasher and Nyala over now and what is the situation with the area around Jebel Mara? What are the rebels up to in the area? Any information would be gratefully recieved

The info I have from Khartoum is it's not possible to get travel permits to anywhere in the Darfur - however things could be different if you turn up from west.

I was there in December. It was not entirely safe in the border area but we were issued a travel permit coming in from Chad.
Mind you we did have valid Sudan visas. |

We are aiming to cross from Chad to Sudan in December time. Aware that it is currently closed but have heard that we might be able to get a permit for Sudan, if we turn up at the border. (Keeping an eye on the situation.) Do you have any useful contacts in the Sudanese Embassy or any tips on getting a visa for Sudan? Where did you get your valid sudan visa from? We can't apply in UK as the visa won't be valid by the time we get there, so I was thinking we would have to try in Chad. (Heard horrendous stories of 6 weeks wait for Sudan visas on the border!) Any tips on getting into Sudan easily, would be great!!! Vicky Quote:

We intend getting our visas in Abuja. Apparently you can get the Chad and Sudan visas there. I have spoken to a few people who have got them there successfully.

I met a German couple in Khartoum in April. They had come through via Chad in their Magirus Deutz. Their visas had expired, but they just modified them. Their opinion and those of one other truck that came through a week later (after the border was supposedly closed) was that the gaurds literate english was very minimal. Geoff |

We got our Sudanese visa thanks to George, the owner of the Acropole Hotel in Khartoum. He is an extremely friendly gentleman of Greek origin. The deal was that we stayed in his hotel for one night and paid for additional charges. All in all, we ended up paying something like USD 220. Which is a lot better than spending six weeks in N'Djamena. You give George your personal details. He then makes arrangements with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Khartoum after which you go to the embassy in N'Djamena to collect your visa. He needs about a week so if you give him the go-ahead when you leave Niamey, you should be alright. We met a Swedish couple who had been waiting in vain for six weeks in N'Djamena and they didn't look happy! Personally, I'd rather spend six weeks in Khartoum... Or more likely, they simply forgot to pull it off.
