Carnet/ TIP in Kenya & Tanzania
 

Can anyone answer the following dilema I have. I am currently on a carnet but wanted to let it run out and cross from Tanzania into kenya on that day and go on to a TIP. How easy is this and how long does a TIP last? about 10 days later I am travelling back into Tanzania and then staying for 3 months and once again hope to remain on a TIP.

So the questions is how long does the TIP last for? and how easy is the paperwork?

Oh, we thought the carnet is compulsory in both of these countries, is it not?
We only ever worked off the attached diagram from the ADAC:
Green is not necessary
Yellow is recommended
And orange is mandatory.

For non- carnet countries your idea is not a problem and very straightforward. Even going from a TIP country to a carnet country, we've never had anyone from the exiting country asking if we have a carnet for the next one we're about to enter.
I thought a TIP was valid for 30 days then you. We'd to go to a customs office to get it extended, but could be completely wrong!

thanks for that, though I disagree with your map as I spent 2 years travelling in S.Africa, Bots and Namibia without a carnet and crossed the borders numerous times without ever being asked. Maybe things have changed now as this was 3 years ago!!

The map wicky posted is out of date and is not based on actual facts. And it's true, many European Carnet issuers including ADAC have this outdated map displayed on their official webpages. Like Desert Driver said - entering the south African customs union (SA, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland) overland does not require a Carnet.

Use the Overlanding Association map instead. It's updated regularly and has alot of useful info about every country's Carnet requirements and all other relevant paperwork as well (International Permits, Insurance, Visas etc.)

It is easy to get a TIP in Tanzania at the border, you don't need a carnet. You will get it for one month, it costs $25,-. You can extend it at each TRA allways for a further month, it is straight forward. Must go to the bank, pay appr. $20, you will get a stamp on your TIP which show the extension.

We have not tried it in Kenya, but we think it should als work in a similar process. We met a spanish traveller in Nairobi, he managed to enter without a carnet on TIP ($20,- per month) with no problems. When you enter Kenya request a TIP and if the officer ask for a carnet simple answer you don't have a carnet. The same process in Tanzania.

Yes no carnet needed in any of the east and southern countries. The map is inaccurate. TIP's are readily available at border posts. Countries I have been through recently, Kenya, Tz, Zambia, Moz, Zim, Bots, RSA, Lesthoto. Enjoy your travels!

I believe this does not include when shipping a vehicle in and out of South Africa?


I have been getting few quotes, lately, to ship our bikes from the UK to Cape Town. It seems that entry to South Africa that way requires a Carnet, according to shipping agents (in the UK).


I plan SA, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique back to SA. I presume my carnet will be used only for entry/exit of SA and not needed for other countries? OR can the carnet make crossing easier/cheaper?

Hi, I have a question :smiliex:
Since carnet is not required in South America or most central Asian countries we have recently been through, I have no experience with it, but was planning to start using it soon as we get to Africa. Could you explain to me why you would want to enter on TIP if you have a carnet? What's the difference? Is there a different procedure or different price of it?
