Carnet application
 

Does anyone know which sub-saharan countries require a carnet? Countries are to include the following (parentheses denote carnet requirement):

From my understanding of the application form, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and Lesotho all come under one customes area, so my carnet would be stamped in on the Angola / Namibia border, and out at the South Africa / Zimbabwe border (according to my above route). It would not be stamped for instance when crossing from Namibia to Botswana, or Lesotho to South Africa etc. Is this correct?

How much leeway is there when entering a country?

If you could share your experiences, maybe we could build up a list of coutntries which require a carnet..

I've been in Tanzania, South Africa and Bots all without a Carnet - they issue TIP's at the border.

Now that has got my attention as Im looking into doing ths trip if at all possible without a carnet.......seems like it is possible then, maybe if you could which border crossing into SA did you use, red tape, red tape makes me sick, so is it possible, replies on this would be much appreciated

YOU CAN enter Nigeria without a Carnet. Same for Gabon , Namibia , Angola , etc..

the only "hard" country is Ghanna , althought people get in without a Carnnet from time to time .

Senegal is definitely doable without major hassles (bribes are around 100Euros to get in).

Definitely the trip is doable without a Carnet. In any case , perhaps you would be interested on register your own bike in Africa , as the rules concerning CDP applies on ly to euro registered vehicles.

With a motorcycle on African plates , you can simply sail trhought borders with absolutely no hassles/troubles at all.

I registered mine in Gambia for as little as 50 Euros (including the new , hand drawn number plates) , and has been the best decision on my trip.

This is interesting. So no carnet necessity for african license plates? I'll be driving under Ghanaian license plate, as stated elsewhere. Am I free?!

Javier, Sounds like an excellent solution, how difficult was it to register the car in Gambia?

This is interesting, I want to avoid the carnet if possible. Does SA definately reqwuire one? As thats where I'm going to see family, I cannot really miss the place out...

Also, whats the deal with registering it back into the UK. Any ideas on cost etc if you make the trip back?

If the plates are hand drawn are you able to just keep the old ones and swap? Not strictly legal, I know, but still...
