Border between Gabon and Congo near southern end of Mayumba lagoon?

Hi,

I am currently investigating how to navigate Gabon. We would like to go to Mayumba NP to see the turtles and camp by the sea. Now I found one hint that there might be a border to Congo on the path that leads along the seafront. There should be some village on the southern end of Mayumba lagoon and nearby the border.
Anyone who has ever used this border?

Thanks to all who could contribute!

Gabon to Congo

Hello Baobabia,

Hope this email finds you well. Happy to see your travel is continuing as scheduled, I will be going South starting from Douala Cameroun from Aug 04 (flying in) till Windohek on Aug 23rd (flying out).

Will you be around in those days? How are you travelling?
Please do let me know if you get any important hint about end of Mayumba Lagoon entrance to Congo.

Ciao - Stefano

Hi Stefano,

sorry, we are still not on the road and will depart from Morocco in October this year only. I am at the moment trying to gather information on possible routes to have a good basis to start from on the ground.
About Mayumba to Pointe Noire I found no clear info so far, therefore I would really like to find out whether the road that is indicated on Soviet Military maps still exists (also on google earth it is not clearly visible).

There is some info from 2008, but these guys didn't try it themselves Scratching the Surface

Some more info I found is from people on local transport who went by boat to Ndindi and from there it should be possible to do the border crossing. But no info about how to get from Mayumba to Ndindi in your own car.

So in case you are going to give it a try, I would really appreciate to get your feedback on this route!

we tried back in 2010 to do this route but found it impassable as the only way that looked that might be do able was along the coast. We made it to Mayumba and took the ferry across and camped on the beach near the airport. The road just ran out, the one that is meant to go past the airport and south down the coast. Not having enough fuel and not knowing where the next fuel might be we didn't want to chance it. it was January so the rainy season and many roads were bad...

Thanks a lot Desert Driver for your info! We plan to be there in January as well, was told this would be the small dry season so I had a small hope for too bad roads. But your info seems to prove me wrong...
However, now there should even be a bridge across the Mayumba lagoon (opened in 2014), so at least the unpredictable ferry topic is gone.
Btw: Did you make it to Sette Cama or Moukabala NP as well while in the region?
