Bike ban in NE Nigeria

Don't know if anyone's in this area but just read on the BBC news website that ALL motorcycles have been banned from the city of Maiduguri in NE Nigeria to combat attacks by boko harem.

Although it's initially temporary there is mention of possible extension to all of Borno state if the attackers keep using bikes

Sorry don't know how to post link, it's on the Africa section of world news

'All motorcycles' banned usually means 'All motorcycles below 200cc used for carrying passengers' banned.

We have gone through several 'motorcycle' bans and still riding.

Some other states have 'banned' motorcycles, some outright and some only in certain cities/areas. Almost all actually mean the above passenger carrying for commercial purpose bikes.

Be prepared for extra hassles at checkpoints though but just point out you are in transit, only have a motorcycle so no option of jumping into a car etc.

I tend to agree with the above. Whatever the rules I doubt a fully laden, foreign, motorbike traveller is unlikely to be targetted for riding a bike.

Bikes are banned in Abuja (to remove the masses of scooter taxis) yet we rode around town for a week hunting embassies without any problems whatsoever (aside from not being able to find said embassies).
