Angola visa in Windhoek - and Angola/Zambia border?

Hi

I am sitting in a backpacker place in Bitterfontein, South Africa. I´m working my way north by bicycle.

I will apply for a visa to Angola in Windhoek. I´m reading that the embassy wants a proof of insurance.... Is that true? I mean: some countries wants insurance of your cars or motorcycles and sometimes you can buy those at the border. But they never ask us cyclists for insurances. Except Angola..? Or do they? That´s the thing I don´t understand. Are the proof of insurence-thing for everybody who apply or only for you guys on MC or car?

Any cyclist or backpacker who recently got their visa in Windhoek (or Oshakati) - exactly what did you bring to the embassy? :-)

I also want some information about the border to Zambia. Is it correct that there are two border crossing open for tourists: Jime and Chavuma?

Are there any good blogs about eastern Angola out there?

Cheers!

Hi Lostcyclist,

I picked up my Angola visa in Windhoek 3 years ago, so am not sure if the info will still be relevant or not. Also cycling.
I was one of the Lucky few at the time. Check the old posts in this forum, you will find more details.
No need for an insurance back then, but a proper letter of invitation/sponsorship from a private Angolan required. And also proof of residency, but I managed to talk them into lifting that requirement.
I doubt you'll find some info regarding the Eastern part of the country. Very few people venture there, most travel in a north-South direction.
Good luck,

L.

Thanks for answer. Further questions:

How did you get your invitations? I was in contact with my embassy in Luanda and they promised to write a recommandation letter (not sure if this would be enough in the first place - but now they wrote that all the staff are on vacation for a month, so no letter from them (until mid-july...).

So my only option is to start all over and trying to find another solution. Shouldnt be much of a problem.

How did you get your invitation? I travelled in Central Asia and Russia last year and everyone bought their LOIs from an online agency? Is that possible for Angola too?

Thanks again and good luck in DRC, Grant Hastie. Please, come back with all the information :-)

Hi Lostcyclist,

About the insurance requirement...

If it is like Gabon, they ask for travel insurance for yourself not the bike.

I just went the the embassy and asked what they actully need to grant me a visa. She showed me a papper with a list of things. Insurance was one of them. But then she pointed to that part and said insurence was not needed anymore (for me, you guys on MC/car - not sure). So one problem less. bier

No there are only one problem left.

Where can I get that Invitation? A lot of people go to Angola. So of course there are a way. A hotel? A travel agency?

Please, I want names and email addresses! Just inbox me if you dont want to write it here!

Thanks

Maybe you can ask at the embassy if a hotel booking is enough. It is at embassies north of Angola.

If going with the letter of invitation, asked them what are the letter requirements. I met some cyclists in Cameroun at the Gabon embassy having trouble with their letter of invitation because it was not notarized in Gabon.

Be patient to get your visa. I was unlucky for getting this one.

I was at the embassy an hour ago - with hotel booking (two nights in Huambo). The women in the front desk accepted it and when I asked if everything was fine with my applicationen they said yes! I hope the cunsular agree... :-)

If so. No, you dont need invitation - book a few nights in a hotel instead!

Sorry for replying late mate.

Did it work at the Angolan consulate with just the hotel bookings ?

3 years ago I got sponsored by a private Angolan ( friend of friends ). It got me a one month visa which I was able to extend once in Luanda ( a real, real hassle, both for him and for me ).

But Angola is great ! Hope you are successful. Keep us posted.
