Medical insurance for New Zealander riding overseas with restricted license

Kia ora,

My partner and I want to ride motorbikes through South America, and sooner rather than later. We both have restricted New Zealand motorcycle licenses.

Does anybody know if you we can get medical insurance cover for overseas motorbike travel without a full license?

We'll be riding LAMS approved bikes, of course ;)

Any comments appreciated. Many thanks.

Like UK policies, many NZ travel insurance policies specify a CC limit- they do not cover acceidents relating to motorcycling, the cut off is usually 125 or 200cc... you need to check the small print, and ring and check with each company you get a quote from.

In addition to the limits Fern has stated they also usually require that you have a full motorcycle licence to ride any powered two wheeler regardless of size, again look out for this in the small print and ask when buying.

My travel policy says I can ride any motorcycle as long as I have the correct licence.

Have you checked that your restricted NZ licences will be recognized in the countries you visit? Most countries have different rules about this.

As an example: one of the British restricted motorcycle licences covers up to 125cc. My daughter had this when she moved to NZ but it wasn't recognized so she had to retake the NZ restricted 250cc licence. Even if she'd taken her UK bike to NZ, she would have been riding illegally.

Many thanks for your replies folks. Looks like we're a lot safer if we hold out for our full licenses.
