Malaria medication in West Africa
Hi,
I shall be travelling from London Uk to Ghana for 4 months then work in Ghana for 4 months and was hoping to find out it is possible to obtain (cheaper??) malaria meds in Africa as this would poss save money and the need to drag a 8 months supply with me... Does anyone know about this possibility?? Many thanks Lotty |
Mephaquin/Lariam and chloroquine are available in the big cities pharmacies. Malarone, I'm not sure...
You have to figure out which prophalaxis works for you and thats something between you and your doctor as you may be allergic to the sulphur based Mephaquin, etc... |
I bought 3 months supply of Doxycycline in Australia for about 100 US dollars. I bought the same amount in Ghana for 5 US dollars (at a pharmacy). Doxy for sure is much cheaper and widely available.

Africa is expensive
You may be shocked how expensive some things are in Africa, including quality medicaments. You may get some basic things cheap but Lariam is not one of them. Every place I asked it did cost much more than in Estonia where I live. Also beware of cheap (fake) stuff.
