Helmets and hair loss
 

After wearing a helmet every day for 3 months, I began to wonder if my hair was falling out faster than it should be. Maybe it looked thinner because it was so dirty, or maybe I'm just getting old and it wouldn't matter if I wore a helmet or not. Any solutions or comments? Get a buzz cut, wear a bandana?

Have you been using Lariam as antimalaria profilax. Lariam is known for its side effect of hairloss amongst a few other side effects.

Not sure about hair loss but after wearing my Arai for 18 months, i seem to have developed a large sunken line on my skull!

So i guess hair loss is possible

used a helmet everyday for 7 months, no hair loss at all. I think a bandana is highly recommended in sake of comfort and for keeping odors out the helmet.

Hi,
Ive been wearing helmet since 1991 when I 1st got my licence, (But only to work & back home) but in 2003-2006 was wearing it from 10:00hrs till 18:00hrs every Mon-Fri while I was doing courier! didnt noticed any hair-loss either. Maybe its age, genetic factor, etc;
Wearing a bandana keeps your helmet cleaner and less odour, if you are in hot (humid) climate like my case!

I was first aware of losing my hair when I saw my (first) wedding video - you couldn't see me for the glare off the bald spot at the back of my head! I have always considered helmets to blame as my father had a full head of hair until the day he died at a good age. My mother agreed with my diagnosis but then, as someone once nearly said, she would say that, wouldn't she.

There are no photos I know of, but apparently my maternal grandfather was losing his hair before he died on active service. Sadly my mother never knew her father (she was still young when he died, and he had been serving overseas for a couple of years by then) so I do not know for sure if he was to blame.

Whatever the cause I am now totally bald (75% natural 25% shaved, and the mix is still changing). I save a fortune in shampoo but have to wear a hat if the sun shines - you only let your scalp burn once. That has not been a problem this "summer". Take heart Cami, a naturalist once told me there is an inverse correlation between the amount of hair/fur a species has and how long it survives. We are the evolutionarily (is that a word?) superior ones.

I have reached a point where nobody would recognise me if I, say, where to wear a wig. I've been bald shaven since 1993, when I realised my hair started to grow thin. But it wasn't due to me wearing a helmet all the time. I just started to be an evolutionary superior being ;-) So speaking of fortunes, I've saved a lot on shampoo and hairdressers, but I'm a fond sponsor of Gillette's products.

When I spent 6 months on the road, from BsAs to Guatemala, I grew it long for the first time and it was the best it's ever been - all those long curly locks. I put it down to the protection offered by my lid and all that lovely natural conditioner - grease.

In the Parachute Regiment, they used to say that shrunk-to-size beret caused hair loss too. Bollox - the time has come.
