Would like to carry tyres for my motorcycle to Argentina as checked baggage
 

Dear all,

I would like to kindly pick your brains and acccumulated wisdom.

I will start a 9-weeks round trip through Chile, Argentina and maybe more mid-December from Valparaiso.

Supply of tyres for own use (KTM 890 R), not commercial, appears to be quite a challenge.

I intentend to pack a spare set of tyres on the bike in the container to Chile.

Further I would like to have a kind of tyre deposit in Argentina, just in case.

Now, I will travel on business to Argentina in November and would like to carry a set of tyres as checked baggage to B.A..

Is this possible or will the import for own consumption/installation on own bike be blocked by aduana argentina? Will duties apply or is their even a risk of seizure at the airport?

leave without you're tires dont even worry about it, there are plenty of dealers in South America that will have your rubber when needed

Have you ever carried tires on a motorcycle? I find it to be a big PIA, adds lots of top heavy weight to the moto, and tends to limit one's choices of what roads to ride, namely exclusively tarmac. If you must have your favorite tires, then my comments are mute. Tires are available in SA, though maybe not your favorite. There are KTM dealers in SA too.

For the purpose of having fresh tires for riding in Colorado, I recently hauled tires on the asphalt highways across the prairies in the States. I was so happy when they were mounted and off the moto.

Your question should be directed to the airline you are using.

Tires that are not inflated are not considered to be a DG (Dangerous Good) by IATA. Having said that, each airline is entitled to set their own rules & policies about what materials they will not carry as baggage or cargo - see the IATA website for more details: Frequently Asked Questions on Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Air.

I'm not familiar with touring in South America - never done that - but I have needed to get tires for my 2001 Honda ST1100 moto in Morocco & Tunisia in the past, and never had any difficulty, even though that type of motorcycle was never sold in those countries and would certainly be considered an 'uncommon oddity' in those countries.

Worst case, you might not be able to find the tire you want to be "in stock" in whatever city or town you are in when you want to change the tire, but it will probably be in stock in a nearby much larger city, and the vendor will be able to arrange to have it shipped to you by bus or other surface transport within a day or two... or, the local dealer in the small town will be able to order it for you given a day or two's notice.

As others have mentioned, it is a massive PITA to carry tires on a motorcycle, really something you don't want to have to do for more than a very short distance.
