What tires for R40 and Carreterra Austral?
 

Hi all,

Need to change rear tire soon on my XR250 - currently in San Juan. Would buy in Santisgo. I've ran 50/50 both front and back and did a fair amount of trail / off-road stuff in Bolivia. Question is world I be better off going 100 road for these routes? Or better off staying with the 50/50s? I was thinking slicks might give me more speed/less throttle and last longer two as obviously a long way south and back. As a side topic was also thinking off downsizing rear sprocket - stock is 38 I think - what would be a good be a good size to go to and world it make any difference? Along with buying windscreen just trying to make my tornado more comfortable for long slogs down highways and straight roads. Any advice welcome!

Forget slicks, Heidenau K60 Scouts are brilliant wearing tyres, good all round, maybe a TKC80 on the front if you plan on dirt, better to have options, right? Loosing 2 teeth on the rear sprocket is as far as I'd go.

Yeah the saharas were okay, so are the mt's. will stick with them then, cheers for the advice!

Just off the CA riding MT21's and they're awesome - best tire used so far - by a mile!

Hey - my front is a MT60 reckon its got around 5k on it, looks fine but worried - bike defo needs to go but do you reckon front will get down and back? Maybe another 8k to 10k max?

The Carretera Austral is not particularly demanding in any respect except navigating endless and sometimes very rudimentary detours due to road construction. There are a few short stretches that have been over-gravelled I think Heidenau K60 rear and TKC 80 Front would be perfect with about 24lbs. Sahara's an excellent second choice.
