what to do with bike whilst trecking into Machu Picchu

My husband and I are traveling two up on our BMW later this year through South America and are hoping to do the 4 day treck to Machu Picchu (October) whilst away. However we need to ensure that we have a secure place to leave the bike. We have sent message to the Cuzco community, but wondering if anyone else out there has stored their bike in Cuzco whilst trecking to Machu Picchu? Obviously dont want to get back and find we have no BIKE!!

Your going to stay in Cusco before & after the walk, right? Since you'll need to find a hotel with secure parking anyway, just make sure it's one that's cool with you leaving the bike there while you do the walk. It's easy. There is a nice hotel run by a Dutch couple that helps street-children - great place to stay, close to the main plaza, and they have a courtyard for parking.

Please let us know what happens. We're planning to do the trek in October of 2007 and will have the same problem except we're on two bikes. Thanks!

(We were planning, as suggested, to store them at the hotel in Cuzco)

I will have the same issue in June. James, you don't remember the name of the hotel by any chance?

I did the trip to Macchu Pichu last week, and left my bike in the secure courtyard of the hotel in Cusco. I stayed at the Hostal Familiar on Calle Saphi, but getting up and down the steps was a bit of a buggar. The owner's promised that there will be a ramp next year!
Or, when you arrive in Cusco, go to the Norton Rats Tavern on the Plaza De Armas, find Jeff, (the owner) and ask him about hotels....he knows a good, secure one close by, and the bar's a good place for a beer or three.

I've been in the Hotel Tahuantinsuyo (http://www.suyohostal.net). A simple and very friendly place with very good service - and there's a closed guarded parking ground around the corner where you can leave your bike for a few soles. I did so and the bike was still there & well when I returned from Machu Picchu. :-) The hotel's owners (Franco & Betty) even organize the trip for you, bring you to the railway station and pick you up afterwards. Franco has a taxi driver and speaks english and italian.
So that's my recommendation :-)

Cusco campground
 

Seems as if the info is gone with the new HUBB. There is a campground near Saksayhuaman (the ruins) run by some dutch folks. It goes off the road to the ruins, in a sharp turn, straight onto a cobblestone road and then it is the second house to the right. there is a large wodden gate.

Hello together,
we have visited Machu Pichu a year ago and let our Bikes at the hostal felix. It is a safe place and you can also let other package there and just take the minimum with you.

Calle procuradores is the road from the Plaza de armas to the hostal (by foot). At the end of this short road you will find a large wooden door. Enter there and ask. They will open that door to get the bikes in.

I really can recommend it. It is not the expensive(24Soles/2 Pers.) but therefor it is just basic comfort. However, you get your own bathroom.And on the ground floor ther is a internetcaffe.

I did the same about 10 years ago, the most of the hostels have space for one or two bikes in their backyard, just ask - they are friendly!!!

This solution is a great one! The ride to Ollantaytambo is beautiful. Another couple benefits are: the train from Cusco departs around 6:00am- as opposed to departing at 10:30am out of Ollantaytambo(this alone was reason enough for me to ride to Ollantaytambo!). Also, you knock around $40usd off the ticket price. Ollantaytambo is small and easy to find a secure place to park. There is a tourist info in the town square.

by the way, i forgot to write that there is a way to go almost all the way with the bikes: check out my post. in these villages you should be able to leave the bike with a family fairly secure and all people who have done it said it was great.
