Visa extension for Brazil - need to cross border?

Ahoy there!

Quick question, splendid people. The last time I was in Brazil (2007) it was with a backpack. The tourist visa was 3 mths on entry. To extend it for another 3 mths, you went to the nearest Federal Police station and, following a payment, that was it.

Is that possible with a motorbike, or do you need to cross the border and re-enter?

Also, is the same rule in place re the maximum length of stay (6mths per year)?

Just trying to work out my timing, since I need to leave Peru mid-Sept and the rainy season starts in these parts as early as Oct around Rio Branco (first city in Amazonian Brasil along the Trans-Oceanic Highway, out from Cusco, Peru) . . . and continues through to Feb+. I'm also not planning to do too much riding over the next few months - need to hole-up and get other things done.

Cheers!

I recently checked this with members of the motorhoming club in Brazil - with the member who has been trying for a couple of years to get the rules relaxed for travellers like us. He said nothing has changed - 3 months initially and readily extendable by 3 months on application to a federal police station. Same for the vehicle (but no info on what happens now with supposedly no TIP.

I got the impression that you could then go over the border and come back and start all over again, but don't take that as gospel.

I entered Brasil from Ciudad del Este and there is NO TIP!! That is why I am going to store my bike here for an uncertain time...

To be 100% sure I asked Rodolfo, the owner of the biker hostel in Foz de Iguacu again and he confirmed it. Then I left Brazil today to see the argentinian side of the Cataratas and returned into Brazil. I stopped voluntarily (NO CONTROL WHATSOEVER!), in order to ask and they said: There is no TIP in Brazil!
On entering and leaving Argentina they only asked for my license plate number (not even checking it). THIS might be due to the agreement of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil that within 150 km or so from the border there is an easier handling of these things. BUT: at the border they said, that there is no TIP in the whole of Brazil.
