Uyuni to san pedro de atacama: Next week!

**** ANYONE WANT TO RIDE UYUNI TO SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA SOMETIME NEXT WEEK? LET'S GO! ***

Leaving Colca Canyon this morning for Lake Titicaca (Copacabana). If you'd like to convoy across the Uyuni Salar, meet around the Lake. Or anywhere further south next week.

Black KLR 650, Silver helmet. Checking in at "Kilometer Zero" entry to Copacabana late today or tomorrow.

See you.

I am leaving this morning from Copacabana to La Paz.
I am NOT looking forward to traversing a big, chaotic city... I am thinking of trying to bomb straight through and head south to Oruro, setting up the next day south to, or through Challapata. What do you think, is La Paz "worth" the hassles?

Water MAY be an issue: I'd like to find out if the rains have covered much of this (or other) tracks across the Salar....

Maybe find out in Uyuni.... However, getting to Uyuni sounds like a problem>>>

I'd like to avoid the construction recently posted by Sudstrom on ADVrider: Challapata to Uyuni. Does another route option exist?

How about skipping Uyuni entirely? (Until now, I see no other way from La Paz to Uyuni than going via Challapata)

For example>>>

Head SW from Challapata, skirt the Western edge of the Salar- and eventually reach Ollaque? Or stay on the Bolivian side down to San Pedro de Atacama?

Another option to avoid Challapata to Uyuni construction?

Thanks for any tips, suggestions. As good or better, anyone want to ride along?

Hi. Maybe we met up in San Pedro. I am right now in La Serena and leafing tomorrow to Atacama. I think it will take me 3 days to go there.

Sadly I have no experience with bolivia to help you.

Greetings
Martin

Uyuni to san pedro de atacama: Next week!

What's your range? Could always head towards Vulcan Sajama then south to San Garcia de Mendoza (fuel here) across the altiplano. Did this solo a few weeks ago then went back to La Paz. Bit sandy in places but otherwise okay dirt minus some washboard if you stick to main route. Few river crossings nothing serious. From SGDM you can head south across the Salt Flat and miss Uyuni altogether heading to San Cristobal to refuel. From there go down to SPDA via Villa Mar and then south to Laguna Verde. I was at the salar two weeks ago and it looked drivable, visit to Uyuni to restock on food and get bike properly de-salted good idea IMO. Overall very remote, lonely but absolutely mind-blowing scenery. Northern part probably more sketchy as no other riders or 4x4s tour groups. Just the odd half-deserted village every 50k or so. Take it easy - not a place you want a bad off especially if you're solo.
