Tyres in Peru

We are currently in Lima for a few days and need some information on the availability of tyres along the coast north of Lima. Trujillo, Chiclayo, Piura or Sullana look like the most likely cities/towns. Tyre size 90x90x21 plus 120x80x18. Pirelli MT60 or MT70's would be OK. Bike is an old R80G/S. The tyres are probably available in Lima but we don't like carrying tyres. Two up with luggage is enough!!! Possibilty is to buy and bus them up.

Checked the hubb but nothing recent about north of Lima.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy folks,

When we were in Huaraz a couple of years ago we ordered some tires (Pirelli MT-60 I think) from a local shop. He called Lima and they were received about 14 hours later. Based on this, I would say that it should be possible to have them delivered up north from Lima. But I never did find out where he called to get them. Sorry.

Oh, and watch those valve stems upon installation!

I can offer only the marginally-relevant information that I found tires easily in Peru--lots of sizes, lots of Pirelli's from Brazil, cheaper than elsewhere. But I bought in Ica and Cuzco.

My operating theory is that you change tires when you've got the chance. I'm puzzled that you're thinking of buying a day's riding from where you're already at, when where you're at is the most likely place for buying tires until you get to Colombia. It's not a question of carrying tires--you buy them, change them out, leave the old ones for whoever wants them, and don't spare a second thought for whether you might have managed another thousand miles on the originals. It's not worth the uncertainty.

But then, I traveled a bit of Peru and Bolivia with people who were constantly holding out for the ideal tire at the idea time, and I left them in part because that had become the organizing principle behind their trip. This might suit some, but it doesn't work for me.

Hope that helps, and hope others have more specific information re the specific places you mention.

Mark

PS: and if you're riding without insurance (as almost everyone does in Peru), watch out for the cop on the main highway north of Trujillo. I've forgotten the town, but it's not far--a dozen or two dozen miles. He's famous for his $200 "fines." I blasted through hugging the tailgate of a truck.

Tyres in Peru

Hola markharf and thankyou for your response.

Contact with several local bikers indicate the availability of tyres in Peru to be limited so we have erred on the side of caution and bought in Lima. This was no easy task as few shops had the 120x80x18 which surprised us as this tyre is the one fitted to the 400cc Honda.

The disgarding of tyres with thousands of kilometres wear still available has been a bit of a problem for us so we thought now was a good time to curb our waste. The cost is not so much an issue (tyres are cheap in Peru) but the general waste. We have been travelling Sth America for 2.5 years and have probably tossed half a dozen tyres away totalling thousands of kms. Not good for our carbon footprint.

Please don't be puzzled by the days ride from Lima. We may take a different route than the Pan American!!! We often get sidetracked by information received or the vision of a different road. That is why we are so slow.He he he he he he!!

No problems with the insurance... We have cover so there will be no need to do a speedy escape..

Safe travels.... Carol & Ken

Tyres in Peru

Hola Brian and Maree.

Thanks for the info. We have bought tyres in Lima so now we need to arrange a bus to get them north. Expect to do another 3,000kms before we leave Peru which will leave a little tread but a lot less than we usually leave.

A local guy we have been in contact helped us out and said it would be no trouble to bus them north and collect them at a bus depot. Two tyres on our back box for another 3,000 kms over rough tracks is not ideal.

How long before you get home?

Hugs...

Carol & Ken

Leave your used tires with whoever changes them out for you (at a dollar or two apiece, I hire this out in Central/South America), or with the first deserving person you run into. You may be tossing the tires, but someone's using them....probably to a point far past their natural lifespan. They're not wasted, and they're not increasing humanity's joint carbon footprint. You can feel properly guilty about all sorts of things in life, but abandoning usable tires in Peru isn't one of them.

Please remit: $0.02
