Tourist registering a bike in Colombia

Hi

I have been looking for information about registering a bike as a tourist in Colombia.

I saw quite many people bought/sold foreign plated bikes with power of attorney.

However, I would like to buy a Colombian Plated XR250.

I had read from other website that says you need a residence permit or something to register a local plated bike.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thank you

JK

I bought a Colombian plated CB150 about 10 days ago. I had help from a local guy and bought it at a used bike dealer. It didn't seem to be a problem, I had to visit a few offices and I am still waiting on my official title, which should be ready in a few days and hopefully can be mailed to me.

I would love to hear other experiences and I will update with any problems or once I have my title so you know if it worked or not :-)

Hi Veganpi

Thank you so much for your info.
So you are a tourist there. you don't have a residence permit or anything ?

According to other website forums, the guy was saying you need a residence permit to register a bike there.

I would really appreciate if you could tell me the flow of the procedure of buying a local bike.

also do you have any idea what's the price range for Honda XR250 in a good condition ?

Honda CTX 200cc todo terrano for sale

Hi Puppywalker
Don't know if you have found a bike here yet but mine is for sale (see the main Hubb sales page for more info). Mine is plated in Peru. I bought it new for $4600 but am now trying to sell it for as little as $2000... and it's still just about new. It's fine for someone else on a tourist visa to buy it...quite easy... and you can legally keep riding it for as long as your visa lasts i.e. if you extend your visa, the bike gets extended along with it.

As other threads have suggested, it's just about impossible to sell a foreign plated bike to a local (it IS possible but very complex, costs money and takes ages...requires you to transfer the ownership first in the country it's plated in, forms usually available on the internet).

I only have 2 weeks left here before I have to return to Australia. I'll be in and around Barranquilla for most of that time... so if you are somewhat interested, let me know asap.

Otherwise... good luck and safe riding. I had a ball on mine so am not worried about losing the $ :-)
Best wishes
Matt
