Temporary import of foreign bike to Chile

Hi there fellow travellers

Im now in Santiago Chile and my bike is coming to Valparaiso next week - shipped from Sydney Australia. Love this place but feel a bit lost when it comes to bureucrasy as I dont speak much spanish.
Anyone who can advice me through what steps are needed to be done to get a temporary import and all that goes with it? (TIP, insurance, etc...)

Or is it better to use an agent - and do anyone has anyone to recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to South America

Welcome to South America.

I shipped my bike in January to Valpo, but I used an agent to get the TIP. Search here on the Hubb for Villa Kunterbunt Valparaiso and you will find the contact details, yes I can recommend them, but they are not cheap, but for me it was worth it as I had a lot of problems with the shipping company, read here if you want:

I did not buy insurance and was never asked.

Good luck.

Btw. there are three HU meetings in the next few months, maybe you can make it to one of them ... Viedma/Argentina in December 2016, Foz do Iguassu/Brasil in March 2017 and Samaipata/Bolivia in April 2017.

Greetings from Bolivia

Thanks for reply Mika, much appriciated.

Ouch - you got some problems there. I have prepaid the whole shipping process so hopefully I wont experience such problems as you had.

May I ask how much did you pay those guys in Valparaiso to get your bike through the whole import thing?

Hi Snakeboy, no sorry I dont remember how much I paid for the agent (Villa Kunterbunt, Martina and Enzo), but it was not included in the costs I listed in the other post. Just phone them tomorrow morning and ask them how much they charge. Chile is not that difficult to get your bike in, you can also try it yourself (of course depending on your level of Spanish). In any case, tell us here how it went. Good luck. mika

I used the services of Ivan Aguilera in Valparaiso. Was very satisfied .

You can buy insurance online. Just write SOAPEX Chile and you'll find some links. The problem is not if someone ask for it, the problem is 'if something happens'?
For customs clearance an agent of our shipper assisted us, but I think you have to fill the same paper you get at the border via road (always the same info: name, pass, plate, chassis etc); no bringing fruit and plant declaration; they check the laggage and the bike. The importer has only done papers, then we went alone to the customs warehouse and 'tried to communicate' with them. Everybody can manage with a bit of patience.

Well as a non spanish speaking person it seemed almost impossible to get something done here so I hired the couple at Villa Kunterbunt in Valparaiso to help me get the bike out of "custody". The main problem was that the custom staff was on strike (as many of the other state employees around in Chile) so it wasnt possible for me to get the bike out of customs. They simply forced me to store the bike in their storage for more than a week - and guess what - I had to pay for that storing! Welcome to Chile and south-America!!!
160 000 chilean pesos to those assholes and of course a bit to Enzo and Martina for the help and assistance they gave me. So it was not a good start of my south-American adventure, to speak in mild terms...

Anyhow - Im on the road now and enjoy it thoroughly - if I only could arrange some kind of insurance I would be overly happy....
